WEST VIRGINIA (WVDN) – Twelve medical students from three medical schools participated in the six-week, comprehensive research training experience. Each extern worked on a research project along with experienced principal investigator mentors and staff mentors from the CAMC Health Services and Outcomes Research Department.
Their topics were devoted to conditions and treatments relevant to West Virginians, ranging from trauma, pediatrics, emergency medicine, behavioral medicine, orthopedic surgery, procedural pain management, cancer screening, kidney transplant, family medicine, gynecology and timely care for acute vascular conditions.
Some of the presentations included topics such as healthy lifestyle assessment in patients with high blood pressure, trauma, youth mental health and psychiatric concerns, predicting ADHD in adults, kidney transplants, and lung cancer screening.
Their oral presentations highlighting their research and findings were presented on July 17 at the CAMC Center for Learning and Research Center.
The summer externship program is named after Dr. Steven Jubelirer, an oncologist. He worked at the CAMC Cancer Center for more than 40 years before retiring in 2023. During that time, he also taught medical students and published scientific papers/abstracts, as well as books and book chapters of research.
Since its inception in 1991, the extern program (recently re-named the Steven J. Jubelirer, MD Summer Research Externship), has had more than 371 participants. It is sponsored by funding from the CAMC Foundation and the WV Clinical and Translational Science Institute.
