GREENBRIER COUNTY W.Va. (WVDN) – On July 8, the Greenbrier County Commission held its regular meeting.
Alderson Mayor Travis Copenhaver was on hand to request funds for repairs on the Memorial Bridge in Alderson. Copenhaver told the Commission the bridge has some major issues. He went on to explain that the city partnered with DOH for $50,000. The mayor said a hammer test had been performed on the bridge, and 60lb chunks of concrete fell off. “Engineers told us not to put the weight of a parade on the bridge’s understructure,” the mayor went on to tell the Commission. The bridge does qualify for some historical significance. The bridge links both sides of Alderson and draws tourists. The Commission approved Mayor Copenhaver’s request.
Next on the agenda was the approval of the bid received for the new generator on the emergency 911 Hopkins Tower. Don Havens said the bid was well under budget, and the generator was a kilowatt greater, so the bid from Greenbrier Technologies and Electric was accepted at $12,021.
Cassie Lawson was on hand to give an update on the White Sulphur Springs TIF find project, which is now complete. It left $97,224,23 not used out of the over $2 million project.
Lawson also gave an update on the White Sulphur Springs wastewater disinfection project. Veratus Contracting was to receive $85,713.25 and EL Robinson $10,816.48 for a combined total of $96,529.73 through TIF funds.
The White Sulphur Springs TIF funds project administrative fees are from October 2024 to April 2025 $2,900.69
Another White Sulphur TIF project, the Ridges project, was not getting water at one of the pump stations. A request was made to transition the project totally to a TIF project. It was noted that time was of the essence in this matter. It was brought up to use the IJDC funds to fund Caldwell, and that this situation does meet requirements for emergency repairs. TIF Funds had previously been $2 million and will now be $2.2 million, raising the Commission‘s part by $700,000.
Amanda Smarr talked about the Quinwood broadband project. The state felt like it could roll into a larger project on the line-of-sight tower.
The amount going out to the gig-ready extension project is a total of $87,397.09.
The phase 2 PSD 2 water line extension project is sending the Thrasher Group $57,328.40
Representatives were on hand to ask the Commission for the 2025-2026 Victims of Crime Advocacy Grant. The Greenbrier Prosecutors’ Office was represented.
Sarah Witt has been hired for employment at the Greenbrier County 911 Center.
Separation of employment was confirmed for Jordan Clendin from Greenbrier County Homeland Security effective June 27.
Steven Simmons was on hand to give an update on the DEP Dilapidated Building program. Originally, there were 54 buildings. Now, they’re waiting on more DEP money, and Simmons has asked for an additional $300,000. They’re focusing on the main routes.
Last on the agenda after coming out of the executive session was the Commission announcing that they are asking the Department of Agriculture for clarification on requesting an exemption from having a slaughterhouse. Nobody from either side was on hand to give comments.
