ELKINS- Central Greenbrier dropped their first game of the all-star season on Sunday afternoon when they lost to Bridgeport 8-5 in the second round of the Little League State Tournament.
Things were running smoothly for CG for two-and-a-half innings, but in the bottom half of the third, Bridgeport exploded for eight runs and was aided by three Central Greenbrier errors that lifted them to a victory and dropped Central into the dreaded elimination game distinction.
After leading off the game with two consecutive singles from Hendo Bostic and Trenton Skaggs, CG got on the board first when Jax Parker drew a bases loaded walk and was credited with an RBI in the process. That put CG up 1-0.
The score remained until that decisive third inning when Bridgeport took advantage of the errors, but they also had five hits as well.
Central Greenbrier did what they could in the top of the fifth frame and tried to rally the troops. Cain Taylor was hit by a pitch and two batters later, Spencer Holliday singled. Then, Bostic lined an RBI double to right field as CG trimmed the deficit to 8-2. Singles from Zander Rodoussakis and Cam Bectel made it 8-4 as both hits drove in a run apiece. Rodoussakis would score on a passed ball later in the inning for an 8-5 game.
And that was the final from Elkins.
Central had 10 hits in the game to Bridgeport’s nine. Bostic and Rodoussakis both went 2-3. Bostic scored two runs and drove in another as Rodoussakis scored a run and had an RBI to lead the way.
Parker started the game on the mound and pitched 2.1 innings, scattered five hits, and struck out three. He allowed eight runs, but only one run was earned.
Hudson Cagle and Tucker Sibold combined for 2.2 innings of shutout baseball in relief.
Central Greenbrier is back on the field again on Monday evening, July 13 when they play Summersville.
