ALTA W.Va. (WVDN) – A Greenbrier County man has been charged with entering without breaking and petit larceny after deputies say he was caught on surveillance video stealing items from a local rock quarry early Friday morning.
According to the Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Office, officers were dispatched just before 6 a.m. on July 11 to Appalachian Aggregates, located along Midland Trail West in the Alta area. Deputies learned that security footage showed a man wearing a ball cap, white T-shirt, dark pants and a black backpack tampering with and entering one of the company’s vehicles between 1:30 and 2 a.m.
Missing from the property were a grey Dell laptop computer with an Appalachian Aggregates company ID tag, a set of Apple AirPods and various food items, including popsicles, deputies said.
An area search was launched, and around 7:15 a.m., a deputy located a man matching the suspect’s description near the intersection of U.S. Route 60 and Interstate 64 in the Sam Black area. The suspect, identified as Daniel Jeffery Sanford Jr., reportedly admitted during a safety search that the stolen laptop was inside his backpack.
Sanford was taken to the Lewisburg Detachment of the Sheriff’s Office, where he requested an attorney and was placed in holding. Investigators then obtained a search warrant for the backpack, which was executed just before 10 a.m. Deputies said they recovered the stolen laptop, two charging cords and a set of AirPods. The laptop is valued at approximately $277.
Sheriff’s officials said the recovered items will be returned to Appalachian Aggregates to avoid disrupting daily operations.
Sandford faces charges in Greenbrier County Magistrate Court.
