WAITEVILLE W.Va. (WVDN) – Tucked away in the Jefferson National Forest, the Yurts on Potts Creek are redefining how visitors experience the mountains, combining the rugged beauty of Appalachia with modern comfort, local history and abundant wildlife.

Set on private land along Potts Creek, these yurts offer a secluded “glamping” experience for guests who want to reconnect with nature while enjoying the comforts of home. Known for its general store, buffalo herd and breathtaking scenery, the site feels remote but accessible, drawing
visitors year-round.

Unlike ordinary tents, these yurts are spacious, light-filled and thoughtfully designed. Each features high ceilings and skylights for natural light and stargazing, plus amenities like heating and cooling, comfortable beds and hot tubs.

“It’s the best of both worlds. You’re surrounded by nature, but you have modern amenities with a hint of luxury,” said owner Wes Sheridan, who runs the yurts with his wife, Susan. “We just took some new pictures of the latest upgrades, like soaking tubs and large decks overlooking the creek.
It’s really something special.”

Each yurt has its own story. The first unit, called The Moonshine, pays tribute to the area’s colorful past.

“The first one’s called The Moonshine,” said Sheridan. “And the reason behind it is because Potts Valley here was known for, you know, back in the day there were about nine different stills, is what we were told from the old-timers around here up and down the valley.”
The second yurt carries a more whimsical name inspired by nature. “The second one, my wife came up with the name Feathered Fern,” said Sheridan, nodding to the lush foliage and abundant birdlife that surround the property.

For nature lovers, the yurts offer plenty to see and do without ever leaving the site. “I mean, if somebody likes to trout fish, they can. We have bird feeders, so we get a ton of every kind of bird you can imagine,” said Sheridan. “There’s a ton of wildlife here, including deer, turkeys and there’s an occasional beaver in the stream. You’ll see everything around this area because we are in the middle of the Jefferson National Forest. It is a true getaway to nature.”

Rustic charm blends seamlessly with thoughtful outdoor living. Yurts feature large private decks or patios with outdoor furniture, fire pits and grills, perfect for gathering with family and friends under the stars.

The surrounding Jefferson National Forest provides miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking and wildlife watching. It’s not uncommon to spot deer, wild turkeys or even black bears in the woods. In autumn, the mountains come alive with brilliant reds, oranges and golds that draw photographers and leaf-peepers alike.

After a day of exploring, guests can visit the nearby town of Paint Bank to grab a meal at the Swinging Bridge Restaurant or browse the historic Paint Bank General Store. Many also stop by the buffalo farm just down the road, a local landmark that speaks to the area’s agricultural roots.

At its core, Yurts on Potts Creek is about slowing down and savoring simple pleasures by crackling fires, starlit skies and the steady murmur of Potts Creek just beyond the deck.

With their blend of outdoor adventure, modern amenities and local stories woven into every detail, the yurts offer guests a true Appalachian escape from the grind of life.

Reservations can be made online through Airbnb, and booking early is recommended, especially during peak seasons in spring and fall.
