State Unaffected

West Virginia educators could find in the Supreme Court decision on racial segregation no clause which would tend to disturb the educational system. The Supreme Court of the United States ruled Monday that Negroes at the Universities of Texas and Oklahoma must be given equal opportunities with whites. The opinion did not disturb, however, the long-established principle which permits segregation where Negroes are provided separate but equal facilities.

Snead Surrenders

The National PGA meet began on the golf course at the Scioto Country Club at Columbus, O., and Samuel Jackson Snead, long-hitting and heavy-moneyed hillbilly from White Sulphur Springs, surrendered his PGA championship in one of the most startling, star-spangled finished the play-for-play classic has ever witnessed. Eddie Burke, 43-year-old Union City, Conn., professional, fashioned the upset in the second match play round. Snead, the defending champion, tourney medalist and the season’s top money winner of over $21,000 had never been so apparently downcast since taking his infamous 8 on the 72nd hole at Philadelphia to blow the 1939 National Open.

Former U. S. Amateur champion Bill Campbell shot a one-under-par 69 and easily won the West Virginia Amateur golf tournament for the fourth year in a row and 15th time since the late 1940s.

Staggers Is Speaker At July 4th Celebration

A small but attentive crowd braved rain and overcast skies to hear the address by the Hon. Harley O. Staggers who represents the 2nd Congressional District of West Virginia in the United States Congress. Mr. Staggers said, “Our forefathers promised that men and women would be free…but our people have become complacent…there are winds of dissent, and our leadership has stagnated in its lust for wealth and power.”

Divorce Is On

Cher says just sit back and be cool, you guys. Yes, she is getting a divorce from rock guitarist Gregg Allman and no, she hasn’t changed her mind. She married Allman three days after her divorce from former partner Sonny Bono. She and Allman separated five days later.
