Bakery Expands
Ben Schoettker, proprietor of the well-known Lewisburg Bakery and its famous “Ideal Bread for Goodness Sake,” announced the opening of a branch salesroom in Ronceverte in the new Ellis storeroom on Main Street.
Health Center Notes
The John A. Preston Community House, with its comfortable rest room, its well -quipped kitchen and dining hall, its carefully selected library, its up-to-date health center, fills a need in the county scarcely realized. During June fifteen tonsil and adenoid operations were performed there. A small child, victim of accidental poisoning, was kept over night too.
Alvon News
The new pastor on the Alvon circuit has closed his fourth revival and has added 42 members to the charges of his charge. He has seven more meetings to be held. The work on the Alvon circuit is in full bloom. Our pastor is a young man, but he is a cyclone in the pulpit.

Camp Shaw-Mi-Del-Eca
Campers at Show-Mi-Del-Eca, the summer camp of Greenbrier Military School, have enjoyed down-river canoe trips and an all-day horseback ride this week. The camp has its own string of horses and qualified braves were selected for this first long jaunt.
State Unaffected
West Virginia educators could find in the Supreme Court decision on racial segregation no clause which would tend to disturb the educational system. The Supreme Court of the United States ruled Monday that Negroes at the Universities of Texas and Oklahoma must be given equal opportunities with whites. The opinion did not disturb, however, the long-established principle which permits segregation where Negroes are provided separate but equal facilities.
Snead Surrenders
The National PGA meet began on the golf course at the Scioto Country Club at Columbus, O., and Samuel Jackson Snead, long-hitting and heavy-moneyed hillbilly from White Sulphur Springs, surrendered his PGA championship in one of the most startling, star-spangled finished the play-for-play classic has ever witnessed. Eddie Burke, 43-year-old Union City, Conn., professional, fashioned the upset in the second match play round. Snead, the defending champion, tourney medalist and the season’s top money winner of over $21,000 had never been so apparently downcast since taking his infamous 8 on the 72nd hole at Philadelphia to blow the 1939 National Open.

Campbell Wins Again
Former U. S. Amateur champion Bill Campbell shot a one-under-par 69 and easily won the West Virginia Amateur golf tournament for the fourth year in a row and 15th time since the late 1940s.
Staggers Is Speaker At July 4th Celebration
A small but attentive crowd braved rain and overcast skies to hear the address by the Hon. Harley O. Staggers who represents the 2nd Congressional District of West Virginia in the United States Congress. Mr. Staggers said, “Our forefathers promised that men and women would be free…but our people have become complacent…there are winds of dissent, and our leadership has stagnated in its lust for wealth and power.”
Divorce Is On
Cher says just sit back and be cool, you guys. Yes, she is getting a divorce from rock guitarist Gregg Allman and no, she hasn’t changed her mind. She married Allman three days after her divorce from former partner Sonny Bono. She and Allman separated five days later.

Girl Suffers Minor Injuries In Alderson Fireworks Mishap
Despite rampant rumors to the contrary, only one person was injured when a ground display misfired during the Alderson Fourth of July fireworks show, sending flames and sparks shooting into the crowed. According to Charles Lobban, Jr., assistant chief of the Alderson Volunteer Fire Department and an organizer of the fireworks display, a female child was treated for a minor burn after the incident occurred.
Hollowell Board Awards Over $255,000 In Grants To Local Bodies
The Board of Directors of Hollowell Foundation, Inc. awarded grants totaling $255,000 to 27 local organizations in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2000. Awards are made in honor of Otto and Margaret Ford Hollowell in keeping with the philanthropic spirit they so strongly demonstrated in establishing the Hollowell Foundation.
Foreign Exchange Student Prepares To Leave Lewisburg
Almost one year ago, foreign exchange student Juliane Hruby arrived from Wittstock, Germany, to live with Anne and Dwight Baldwin and daughter Jennifer Tubbs of Lewisburg. Hruby won a partial scholarship through Youth for Understanding, good for a one year stay in the United States. Having spent the past school year as an eleventh grader at Greenbrier East High School, Hruby was an honor student and was active in the Greenbrier East Choir.
