I have been watching current events unfold in our country and am moved to comment on what I have been seeing. In the recent past we saw the richest man in the world on behalf of the richest country in the world decide to deny food and medicine to the poorest starving children in the world. This was done with the full support of our elected representatives and by extension with the full support of the American people. It is worth noting that the food and medical care that kept these people alive had been in place for over 60 years and cost less than 1% of the US budget. A recent analysis by The Lancet, a leading medical journal, projects that at least 14 million deaths will occur over the next 5 years as a direct result of this decision by the American people.
Current estimates are that approximately 6 people a minute are dying because of the end of this aid. I know we are all busy but if possible try and invest 1 minute and look at a clock or watch and every 10 seconds really picture a horribly emaciated child dying an excruciating death from starvation and remember this is an act supported by the American people to save 1% of their budget.
For me, this is an act of cruelty.
Now our elected representatives have decided to bring this cruelty home and to deny health care and food assistance to our fellow Americans. This is especially true for our state of West Virginia which will be one of the most impacted by these decisions and whose representatives are all in full support of these actions. What is the end goal of this appalling display of heartlessness and cruelty? To implement the greatest transfer of wealth from the poor and working Americans to the richest people in America if not in the world.
I will end my comments by citing what I felt compelled me to comment on this situation, I suggest it is worthy of consideration by us all.
“Open your mouth, judge righteously, and defend the rights of the poor and needy,” Proverbs 31:9
