HUNTINGTON- The Central Greenbrier 10U all-stars opened state tournament play on Friday morning but unfortunately suffered a tough 9-3 loss in the first round.
Central Greenbrier dug themselves an early hole in the top of the first when Mineral County scored five runs and took a quick 5-0 lead. Central also committed a couple of errors that helped aide their opponents scoring.
That score remained until the second inning when Central Greenbrier got a crooked number on the scoreboard.
Two consecutive singles from Keenan A and Wyatt B got CG on the board. Finally, an RBI groundout by Sam S trimmed the Mineral County lead to 5-2.
But that would be as close as the hometown boys would get.
Mineral County scored four runs over their next three at-bats to put the game away. Central did get a final run in the last frame when Carson P stole home, but the game was decided at that point.
Maddix D led Central Greenbrier at the plate and had a 2-3 day. Keenan A and Wyatt B were the only other two CG players that had base hits.
Central Greenbrier’s bullpen was a bright spot. After Beckett M got some unfortunate luck as the starter as he gave up just two earned runs, the bullpen threw six combined innings, gave up six hits, two runs, and had five strikeouts.
With the loss, Central Greenbrier will now play an elimination game on Saturday afternoon, July 5 at 1:00 vs. Elk District. Elk District lost to Bridgeport 3-1 on Friday.
