FAIRLEA- We are just about eight weeks away from the Greenbrier East Spartans kicking off the football season at Riverside and over the last couple of weeks, the team has participated in some 7-on-7’s during their June summer practices.
The team traveled to Virginia Tech a few weeks ago, then hit up West Virginia State on Wednesday, June 18, then on Thursday, June 26, they stayed home and got the young guys some work.
Head coach Ray Lee was impressed with his team’s performances at Tech and State but had to laugh at the tough opponents his Spartans had to face.
“We went down to Virginia Tech and took some young players with us, and it was an experience for them also. I don’t know how they set those brackets up, but we were kind of thrown in there against some pretty good teams,” Lee said laughing.
“All of them seemed like private schools and small colleges, but I’d say our guys fared pretty good. It was Good Counsel out of Maryland and as a matter of fact I was talking to Independence coach Wes Lilly and we were looking at the brackets and he said,” oh gosh coach, y’all are going up against Good Counsel. They’re probably ranked like number seven in the country and was like, how did we get them first draw,” Lee asked jokingly.
However, the result was decent.
“I will say our guys played good against them. You know, moral victories and everything, but we had the game won but it became a struggle and on the last play they threw a pass, and our guy went up with their guy in the end zone and they were tussling over the ball and they (Good Counsel) just ended up yanking it away from him. That gave them the winning score, but we weren’t disappointed there.”
On their next road trip, the Spartans did not win as many as they hoped, but the team and coaches know exactly how close they to turning a real corner this year.
“We went down to West Virginia State and played six games, and we ended up losing four of them on the last play or the last second of the 7-on-7 so we are still working on trying to build that mentality of when it’s that time, let’s make sure we take advantage of it,” Lee concluded.
East just finished up their June practices and will stay in the weight room for offseason workouts until fall camp begins in several weeks.
