LEWISBURG- After having defeated Shady Spring just a couple days earlier, the Central Greenbrier 12U all-stars had plenty of confidence heading into Friday night’s District 4 championship game rematch at Hollowell Park in Lewisburg.
The confidence was warranted.
CG used a big second inning to pull away from Shady and they also held their opponents to just two hits on the night as they cruised to a 5-0 record, a district title, and will now prepare for the state tournament.
Central had just four hits themselves but their patience at the plate resulted in drawing eight walks and some hit by pitches which in all cases, count the same as base hits.
Shady jumped ahead 1-0 in the top of the first, but that was literally all she wrote for them.
With two outs in the bottom half, Trenton Skaggs scored on a wild pitch, then Zayden Walker took one for the team and got hit by a pitch. Zander Rodoussakis would score on the next batter in a crazy sequence and Central Greenbrier held a 2-1 lead after the first inning.
Then, in that big second inning, CG put the game on ice.
Jax Parker scored on a shady error, Dawson Holiday crossed home on a wild pitch, and Skaggs drew a bases loaded walk that made the score 5-1 with two outs. Then, a 2-run double from Rodoussakis put Central Greenbrier up 7-1 and that was followed by scores from Skaggs on a wild pitch and Rodoussakis on a pitcher error. The score was 9-1 after two.
Skaggs doubled home a run in the fifth and Hendo Bostic’s run a couple batters later ended the contest in the fifth inning.
Skaggs (1-1, 2 runs, 2 RBIs) and Rodoussakis (1-2, 2 runs, 2 RBIs) led the offensive attack for Central Greenbrier. Bostic and Tucker Sibold had the other two hits.
Hudson Cagle pitched two innings to pick up the win on the mound. He allowed just one hit and struck out three. Sibold, Graham McDaniel, and Walker all pitched well in their relief appearances.
The WVDN will update when details are known about the state tournament.
