River Pollution
Depositions were taken at Hinton last Wednesday in the suit against two tanning companies in Pocahontas County for a permanent injunction to prohibit the further pollution of the Greenbrier River by the dumping of tannery waste into the stream.
Potato Growers Unit
All members of the Irish Corner Potato Growers Unit are hereby requested to inform the County Agent at once as to the number of new sacks they estimate they will need in which to market their potatoes. This is an urgent matter.
Organizing Guard
The effort now being made in Ronceverte to organize a company of the National Guard is making fine progress and it now seems certain that the required number will be enlisted. Both the American Legion post and the Business Men’s Club have become interested in the success of the movement and are giving it the fullest encouragement.

First Flower Show
More than 200 individual and distinctive entries competing in 27 different arrangements, marked the first annual flower show of the Tri-City Garden Council held in the Lewisburg High School auditorium June 7. Garden clubs of Ronceverte, Lewisburg and White Sulphur Springs comprising the council sponsored the show.
Greenbrier Commencement
“You are never through with an education, “ Miss Terry Ferrer, Education Editor of Newsweek, said to members of Greenbrier College June 5. This commencement marked the 25th year of Dr. French W. Thompson as president of Greenbrier and Miss Marion Currie as dean.
Liberty Bell
Al McHale, chairman of the Greenbrier Volunteer Savings Bonds committee, announced today that the Liberty Bell replica would arrive in Lewisburg June 16 and be on display in front of the Firechief Service Station. The bell will be rung on the hour during its stay in Lewisburg. The Liberty Bell is a great deal more than the symbol of the Independence drive McHale said; it is the symbol of our freedom and personifies the American spirit.

Glass Suffers Loss
Saying West Virginia’s glass industry has suffered because of “cheap, imported glass products,” Sen. Robert C. Byrd said he was confident the International Trade Commission would recommend against reducing the tariffs on imported glass products.
Divers Join In Search For Hauer
A number of scuba divers joined in the search for clues to the whereabouts of Peter M. Hauer, the prime suspect in the murder of 18-year-old Walter Smith , a summer worker in Watoga State Park. State police said the divers are searching water that covers the bottom of a large number of caves in the Hillsboro area.
Prince Is Beheaded
The silver sword flashed three times against the setting sun to the chants of “God is great.” With the last slash of the executioner’s blade, the head of Prince Faisal bin Musaid rolled onto the desert dust. Thousands of Saudi Arabians turned out in Riyadh for the beheading of the American-educated prince, convicted of assassinating King Faisal three months ago.

City Holding Company CEO Resigns
The chief executive officer of a bank holding company with several local branches resigned. Steven Day, CEO and president of City Holding Company, stepped down after the company’s stock plummeted to a 52-week low of $6.25 per share. City Holding Company is the parent of City National Bank. A former Lewisburg resident, Day had been executive officer of the multimillion-dollar holding company since 1990.
Morse Reese Honored At City Council Meeting
At the Lewisburg City Council meeting a resolution was approved honoring Morse Reese who served as the city administrator since 1994, and administrative zoning officer since 1997. Reese is working his last week at city hall, training the man who will replace him as city administrator.
WVSOM Graduate 57 At 23rd Annual Commencement
Robert E. Wise, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from West Virginia was keynote speaker and received an honorary Doctor of Science degree during the ceremony. “You have attended an excellent school, been taught by a great faculty, and learned to appreciate the proud traditions of West Virginia and her people, said Wise.
