BECKLEY W.Va. (WVDN) – Building healthy habits can feel like just another task on a long to-do list, especially in communities facing economic and environmental barriers. True, lasting change starts with recognizing the movement we’re already doing and finding ways to build on it, even when faced with real-world challenges.
Governor Morrisey’s Mountaineer Mile initiative, part of his Move Your Body, Change Your Life pillar, is a call to action for all West Virginians. Active Southern West Virginia, in partnership with the WV Physical Activity Plan, is answering that call with a fresh, fun approach that celebrates movement in all its forms.
Instead of focusing on what’s missing, Move More with Active Southern West Virginia invites West Virginians to celebrate the ways they already move — and to discover just how far those steps can take them. Beginning June 9, this six-week challenge encourages participants to track their daily activity, convert those active minutes into Mountaineer Miles, and gradually work toward the CDC-recommended 150 minutes of weekly physical activity. No complicated math required — Active SWV has done the hard part for you!
Individuals, businesses, schools, and community groups can join by signing the Move More Promise Form anytime in May. Weekly challenge emails packed with encouragement, education, and inspiration will help participants stay motivated and connected to a larger movement sweeping across the state.
“It is our hope that by inviting businesses, communities, and individuals to participate, we can build an ecosystem of change in West Virginia, where the healthy choice becomes the easier choice,” said Melanie Seiler, Executive Director of Active SWV.
Joining is simple, and every step counts. Follow along with Active SWV’s social media for tips, stories, and celebrations from fellow West Virginians. Let’s move more, lift each other up, and build a stronger, healthier West Virginia — one Mountaineer Mile at a time.
