WEST VIRGINIA (WVDN) – West Virginia Intermediate Court of Appeals Judge Dan Greear announced his intention to seek election to his position on the Court in May of 2026. Greear, the first Chief Judge of the Court, was appointed to a four-year term by then Governor Jim Justice in 2021.
Judge Greear stated that “West Virginians deserve fair courts and honest Judges. I am looking forward to showing the entire state that I have done and will continue to provide those ideals to our state. Serving as one of the initial judges on the ICA has been the highlight of my professional career, and I look forward to continuing to build on the strong foundation of the court that we have established.”
Judge Greear is a lifelong West Virginia resident. He graduated from South Charleston High School, received his Bachelor’s degree from Liberty University, and graduated from the WVU College of Law in 1992.
Prior to being appointed to the ICA, Judge Greear served as Chief of Staff and Chief Counsel for the West Virginia House of Delegates. In that capacity, he received the 2021 Legislative Staff Achievement Award from the National Conference of State Legislature’s Leadership Staff Professional Association. Additionally, Judge Greear was also appointed to the circuit court bench in Kanawha County in July 2018, where he served until November of that year.
Judge Greear was chief counsel for the West Virginia Attorney General’s office from 2013 to 2014. From 1992 to 2013, Greear practiced law at a number of firms in Charleston, West Virginia, including KKB, LLC, where he served as a Managing Member. Judge Greear served as a Republican in the House of Delegates representing the 30th District in Kanawha County from 1995 to 1996.
Judge Greear has also been a football official with the WVSSAC since 1999 and has officiated numerous high school playoff games and a state championship. He and his wife, Amy, are members of Spring Hill Baptist Church where Judge Greear serves as a deacon and Sunday School Teacher.
Judge Greear and his wife reside in South Charleston. Their oldest son, Josh, currently serves as a First Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. Their youngest son Ben recently completed his second year of law school.
