LEWISBURG, W.Va. (WVDN) – The Lewisburg City Council approved continued funding for its ongoing water treatment plant improvement project Tuesday during its regular monthly meeting, while also recognizing law enforcement officers and local student essay winners. The meeting was held at 7 p.m. in the Paul R. Cooley Council Chambers in downtown Lewisburg.

Council members unanimously approved Resolution 582, authorizing Pay Request 39 for the water treatment plant project. The council also approved three change orders tied to the work, including two related to Contract 8 and another to Contract 1. A new contract for Water Plant Operator James C. Lawson was also approved.

Mayor Beverly White issued several proclamations early in the meeting, including ones for National Police Week and Peace Officers Memorial Day. The council also proclaimed Youth Week and recognized winners of the Elks Lodge Essay Contest.

City Manager Misty Hill delivered updates on various administrative issues, including the installation of a septic system at the Public Works Building by Critter Enterprise, the renewal of the city’s WVCorp liability insurance and West Virginia Workers’ Compensation coverage.

Reports were also delivered by Police Chief Chris Teubert and Fire Chief Joseph Thomas.

Councilmember Arron Seams presented the Finance Committee’s report, which included approval of arts and humanities funding for Carnegie Hall, Inc., as well as maintenance and support contract renewals with Mountaineer Computer Systems and Greenbrier Technology, Inc.

The council also designated settlement funds from Pfizer, Inc. and Ranbaxy, Inc. for city use and approved an engineering firm for a planned sidewalk improvement grant project.

The council accepted bids for city street paving and reviewed upcoming plans for an employee picnic. In other business, the Planning Commission reported approval of a minor subdivision on Lafayette Street. The Parks Commission discussed updates to fee structures for non-residents participating in public benefit events. Public Works Director Roger Legg also addressed the council with an update on street maintenance and utility projects.

The council approved the minutes from the previous meeting and allowed time for public comments on non-agenda items.

Council members present included Sarah Elkins, Franklin Johnson, John Little, Valerie Pritt and Arron Seams. Also in attendance were Mayor White, City Manager Hill and City Clerk Crystal

Ratliff.
