CHARLESTON- Pitching and defense were on display at Sissonville High School on Monday night for the Greenbrier East Spartans regional baseball game against the Sissonville Indians.
Unfortunately for Spartan fans, the Indians made one more play than East and escaped with a close, 2-1 victory, effectively ending the Spartans season at 19-13.
After two scoreless innings for both teams, it was Greenbrier East who took a 1-0 in the third inning to get the scoring started.
Ashton Cochran led off with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Brayden Bascombe then grounded out which moved Cochran over to third base. He scored on Zion Detko’s sacrifice fly immediately after.
But the slim lead didn’t last long. Noah Harless began the bottom half of the third with a triple. He then scored two batters later on Eli Simonton’s single and the contest was tied at 1-all after three innings.
Scoring was at a premium all game until the bottom of the fifth frame when the Indians came back on offense. Simonton and Maddox Balog singled and doubled, respectively, and E. Simonton scored when Nathaniel Simonton hit a sac fly to right field.
The Spartans just could not muster up the offense but had one final chance in the sixth. With the bases loaded and two outs, Ashton Cochran stepped in and worked a 1-1 count but chopped a high bouncer to second base and grounded out to end the inning.
East went down in order in the seventh as Sissonville moved while the Spartans will hang it up for 2025.
Brady May was 2-3 for East. Detko was 1-3 with an RBI.
Nelson Lynch concluded his season with a good showing on the mound and pitched six innings and allowed just two earned runs.
East says goodbye to five seniors: Detko, Cochran, Joe Baker, Bascombe, and Eli Green.
The Spartans will be back on the field for head coach Cory Mann in March of 2026.
Look for a season recap story soon.
