LEWISBURG W.Va. (WVDN) – Each May, we celebrate our moms and the impact they’ve had on our lives. For one mother-daughter duo, this Mother’s Day weekend was even more significant as they were chosen to have their artwork featured side by side at Carnegie Hall’s Art Walk exhibit. Misty Murray-Walkup (mother) and Tia Walkup (daughter) are both Greenbrier County natives whose work will be on display together through June 27, 2025 in the Museum Gallery at Carnegie Hall.
The exhibit, which opened on Friday, May 9, kicked off Mother’s Day weekend with a crowd who were encouraged to immerse themselves in the arts. When asked what having this exhibit with her daughter means to her and having it open on such a special weekend, Misty replied “This is our first exhibit with just solely Tia and I. It feels like we have come full circle having gone from her growing up watching me paint to her going off to Marshall and getting a degree in art education and now becoming an art teacher. Now, we can learn from each other, be a support to each other and continue to grow our mother-daughter bond with a genuine love of art.”
With prices ranging from $100 to $900, the mother-daughter exhibit is as diverse in subject matter as in price. While Misty focuses largely on wildlife, her daughter Tia enjoys a wide variety of subjects with a special interest in Appalachia themed work.
Misty Murray-Walkup is a successful artist with more than 30 years of experience. Her work has appeared in the WVDNR Wildlife Calendar, at Tamarack as a juried artist and she has been commissioned to create custom pieces, including the official Print of the Year for the State Fair of West Virginia. In addition, she is nearing completion of the memorial wall in Rainelle honoring the flood victims of 2016. Tia Walkup, her daughter, was raised in Greenbrier County and received a master’s degree in Arts in Teaching from Marshall University. She currently resides in Huntington, West Virginia where she works as an art teacher and continues to pursue her love of art through painting and freehand embroidery.
The Museum Gallery housing the work of Misty and her daughter Tia, is located next to the auditorium in Carnegie Hall on 611 Church Street in Lewisburg, West Virginia. The Art Walk exhibit also features artists Kelly McQuain in the Lobby Gallery and Fred Hays in the Old Stone Room Gallery. The exhibit runs through the end of June and is free and open to the public from Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, visit carnegiehallwv.org or call 304-645-7917.
