LEWISBURG, W.Va. A Franklin County, Virginia man was arrested Saturday, May 10 in Greenbrier County on multiple charges, including domestic battery, strangulation and malicious assault, after a reported domestic disturbance outside a convenience store, authorities said.
At approximately 3:55 p.m. on May 10, West Virginia State Police responded to a call from the Greenbrier County Emergency Operations Center regarding an altercation at the Marathon Little General Store, located at 14967 Seneca Trail North, according to a criminal complaint.
Upon arrival, a state trooper observed a man and woman inside a gray four-door vehicle, where the man was allegedly yelling and cursing at the woman as she exited the vehicle. Authorities separated the individuals for questioning.
The victim displayed visible injuries including a black eye and a deep laceration on her forehead, according to police. The victim told troopers the incident began earlier that day around noon in White Sulphur Springs, where the man, identified as Jacob Mallow Vanburen, allegedly placed both hands around her neck and choked her to the point where she nearly lost consciousness.
The victim also reported that Vanburen threw her to the ground and stomped her head into the pavement, causing the head injury, according to the complaint.
Vanburen was detained at the scene. Authorities later confirmed he had active Circuit Court capias warrants in both Greenbrier County and Franklin County, Va., including one for possession of a controlled substance.
He was formally arrested on charges of domestic battery, strangulation, malicious assault and the outstanding warrants. Vanburen was processed at the West Virginia State Police detachment in Lewisburg before being transported to Southern Regional Jail, where he remains pending arraignment. The investigation is ongoing.
