RONCEVERTE W.Va. (WVDN) – The Ronceverte City Council gathered Monday, May 5 at City Hall to address a range of municipal issues, including the first readings of two key ordinances and a proposal to expand the local farmer’s market.
City leaders then turned their attention to ongoing infrastructure concerns, including wastewater, water, and stormwater systems. While no specific details were publicly disclosed during the agenda review, these discussions are part of an ongoing series of improvements aimed at updating Ronceverte’s aging utilities.
Among the new business addressed was Ordinance 2025-03, which proposes a zoning change for the site of the former elementary school on Academy Street. The measure, undergoing its first reading, could pave the way for redevelopment of the historic property, though no specific project was detailed during Monday’s meeting.
Council also conducted a first reading of Ordinance 2025-04, concerning the implementation of a Home Rule Sales Tax. If adopted, the ordinance would allow the city to impose a local sales tax under West Virginia’s Home Rule Pilot Program, a move expected to increase municipal revenues.
A proposal to enhance Ronceverte’s farmer’s market was also reviewed. The initiative aims to expand access to local produce and artisan goods, as well as boost foot traffic to the downtown area. The council moved to approve the proposal, signaling growing support for local agriculture and small business development.
Departmental reports followed, with updates from the police, fire, street, wastewater, and water departments. Council and city administrator comments were also included in the meeting, along with an open forum for citizens to speak.
The meeting concluded with the approval of minutes from both the regular April 7 session and a special meeting held on April 15. Although the forum became somewhat heated during public comment, the meeting concluded after nearly 2 hours.
The next City Council meeting is scheduled for June 2, 2025.
