LEWISBURG, W.Va. (WVDN) – More than 100 residents gathered in downtown Lewisburg Thursday afternoon for a “Hands Off!” rally, part of a nationwide series of protests against federal budget cuts proposed by the Trump administration.
The event, held in the town’s Greenspace park, was organized by local activists and Democratic leaders who expressed concern over the potential impact of federal spending reductions on healthcare, education and social services in West Virginia.
Participants held signs reading “Save Our Schools” and “Healthcare Is a Right,” while chanting slogans urging lawmakers to reject the proposed budget. The rally was one of several held across the state as part of the broader “50501 Movement,” which organized over 1,200 protests nationwide.
Despite the rainy weather, the mood remained upbeat, with attendees sharing personal stories about how federal programs have positively impacted their lives.
The rally concluded with a call to action, encouraging participants to contact their elected officials and urge them to oppose the proposed budget cuts. Organizers emphasized the importance of civic engagement in shaping policies that affect the community.
As the national conversation around federal spending continues, local events like Thursday’s rally highlight the ongoing concerns of West Virginians regarding the potential impact of federal policies on their daily lives.
