BUFFALO- The Greenbrier West Lady Cavaliers overcame six errors in the field to defeat the Buffalo Bison 9-5 on the road on Saturday afternoon.
West (10-7), who led consistently from the second inning on, had 12 hits on the day and saw Jenna Hunter hit her first home run.
After falling behind 1-0 in the bottom of the first, the Cavs picked up a couple runs in the second. A single from Preslee Treadway got things started and she scored two batters later on an RBI double from Brooke Patterson. Then Patterson crossed home plate as well on a fielding error from Buffalo on a ball hit hard by Kyndall Taylor.
Speaking of Taylor, she held the Bison scoreless in their half of the second frame and Greenbrier West led 2-1 after two.
Brilee Redden scored on a passed ball for the Cavs lone run in the third and they led 3-1 at that point.
Fast forward to the fourth inning with Greenbrier West still leading 3-1, Taylor walked to lead off. Following Ava Price’s strikeout, Hunter stepped into the box. She took a 2-2 pitch off Buffalo pitcher Zoie Hawkins and drove it over the center field fence and gave her Cavaliers a more comfortable 5-1 advantage.
The Bison cut that deficit to 5-3 in the bottom of the fourth which made Hunter’s homer that much more important.
However, it didn’t take West to get the runs back as Taylor helped her own cause with a 2-run double in the top of the fifth inning to give the Lady Cavs a 7-3 lead.
Buffalo (9-4) tried to come back but they never really threatened seriously.
West added two more runs on the day, an RBI single from Taylor that scored Maddie Fields, and a Zoey James run when Redden hit into a double play in the seventh frame.
Taylor was good in both of her phases. She went 2-3 with two RBIs on offense, and on the mound, she threw a complete game and allowed just one earned run. She also struck out five.
Patterson went 2-4 with two runs and one driven in. Treadway and Brooklyn Adkins also had two hits each for the Cavs.
Sarah Affolter led Buffalo with a 3-4 afternoon.
The Cavs will host Webster County on Monday, April 28 at 5:30 PM.
