Dear Curious,
Goodwill Label Stories is a research/art project by Lynda Grose. The artist asks people if they would like to label their secondhand clothing that they have purchased or have purchased in the past. She asks them to explain “why or why not” and documents their responses. Grose then labels the garment free of charge and photographs the person in/with the garment. The project aims to help popularize secondhand clothing and to broaden participation in sustainable fashion. She gathers diverse perspectives on our relationship with each other and with fashion, including secondhand fashion. These discussions bring up lots of broad points. Lynda Grose will be the featured speaker at the WV Sustainable Fashion Show to be held on Saturday, April 26 at 5:00 at the Lewis Theater in Lewisburg.

What does one do with all the junk mail that comes in daily? Don’t Want It

You are not alone in receiving so much unwanted junk mail. The number of pieces of junk mail seems to increase exponentially. Over 100 million trees are cut down each year to produce all this unwanted junk mail and catalogs. Making a contribution to a non-profit, particularly a small donation, often results in more junk mail as donations of $25 or less barely cover marketing costs. According to Charity Navigator, the premier evaluator of charities, many organizations sell donors’ names to other charities to generate extra revenue to cover the expense of small donations. Opt-out is a term used describe the desire to no longer receive unwanted mail from companies. The website, https://www.wikihow.com/Get-off-Mailing-Lists, lists all the ways you can get off mailing lists, including the Direct Marketing Association (DMA) or Mail Preference Service. BBB Consumer Education advises writing “Take me off your mailing list” on the reply card and sending it back to the charity. Using the reply card enables the organization to identify you. Do not write that on the return envelope with return postage unless you put a stamp on it. The nonprofit mailing rates used by charities won’t pay for these returns.

I want to recycle a large number of manila file folders and those larger brown folders that hold the file folders. Which bin do I deposit them in? Cardboard? Thanks. Organizer

Manila file folders can be recycled with either office paper or cardboard. The large brown folder can be recycled just with cardboard. Be sure to remove any plastic or metal parts or elastic bands that may be attached to them before placing them in the recycle bin.
Interesting Information: Sea sponges can live for thousands of years! Some shallow-water species have lived over 2,300 years, and deep-sea sponges even longer. One kind of sponge, Monorhaphis Chuni, has been estimated to have lived for around 11,000 years, making it one of the oldest animals on Earth.
