BECKLEY- Brilee Redden has been a roll this season for the Greenbrier West Lady Cavaliers and on Monday evening at Class AAAA’s Woodrow Wilson, the junior did nothing to change that fact.
Redden struck out eight batters over six innings and allowed just two hits en route to a 2-0 shutout victory over Woodrow and their star ace pitcher Aubrey Smallwood.
At the plate, Redden also picked up the only two hits in the game for Greenbrier West (9-5) and she had an RBI in the first inning when she doubled home Maddie Fields who had walked to lead off the inning.
Both pitchers stayed on cruise control for most of the game until the Cavaliers got a little going in the third frame and again, it was Redden who started it. She hit her second double of the game, this one to left field and moved Brooke Patterson, who had gotten on base due to a hit-by-pitch, to third. Preslee Treadway then laid down a great sac bunt and Patterson scored and gave the Lady Cavs an insurance run that ultimately, they did not even need anyway.
In the bottom of the seventh with a runner on second base, Redden struck out Marley Stonebeck to end the mini threat and seal the victory for the Cavs.
For Beckley (10-8), Smallwood, who has struck out 660 batters in her career in just 304.2 innings, had 16 strikeouts in the game.
Greenbrier West will travel to Pikeview on Tuesday, April 22 for a tough game with the Lady Panthers. Pikeview beat Greenbrier East 6-2 on Monday night.
