James R. Baker
James R. Baker, 61, of White Sulphur Springs, WV, passed away March 24, 2025. Born on July 17, 1963, in Welch, WV, James dedicated 39 years of his life as a bartender at The Greenbrier Hotel, where he was not only a staff member but a cherished mentor and friend, especially to international students.
A proud veteran, James served in the United States Army before returning home to care for his grandmother. His life was marked by a deep commitment to his family, whom he placed above all else. He married Terra in 1997 in Beckley, WV, and together, they raised three children.
James will be remembered for his boundless generosity and willingness to extend a helping hand. His love for the great outdoors was evident in his hobbies, which included woodworking, fishing, and hunting. His enthusiasm for sports was also evident in his role as a coach, where he left a lasting impact, mentored and shaped the lives of many young individuals.
He is survived by his mother, Margie Meadows; his wife, Terra; his children, Hunter Baker (Abigail Adkins), Chelsie Baker (Taylor Shockley), and Briana Adams (Roy Davis); and his grandchildren, Baylor Zane Baker and Ruger Clay Davis. He also leaves behind his sisters, Ellen Elmore (Tom) and Alethea (Cookie) Gallagher (Jim); nieces and nephews, Michael Elmore (Paige), Matthew Elmore (Katie), Justin Meadows (Megan), Derick Meadows, Brian Gallagher (Chantella), Joshua Hall (Morgan), and Peyton Jackson; great-nieces and nephews, Nova and Bishop Elmore, Gatlin Elmore, Kendal Kegley, Percival Gallagher, Camden, and Harlem Hall.
Further cherishing his memory are two special young girls, Khloie Brooks and Channing Dean, who knew him fondly as Pap-Paw James. His memory will be held dear by a host of close friends who became like family, including Sue Scott, Fred Molpus, Bill and Lynn Amick, Barbara Scott; and his camping companions, Randy Church, Gregg Church, Andy Sparks, and others.
James was preceded in death by his father, James Ralph Baker Sr.; his stepfather, James Meadows; and his sister, Leslie Jackson.
James’s family is grateful for the compassionate care provided by HospiceCare CAMC Memorial, acknowledging the exceptional support from the medical staff and Teresa, who made significant efforts to provide comfort during his final days. Special thanks are also extended to C.J. Cole, Dr. Mark Kirk, Bill Amick, and Jeff Beane for their spiritual guidance and support.
Following James’s request, his remains have been cremated. A Celebration of Life to pay tribute to his life will be convened on May 4, 2025, at 3 p.m. at Dorie Miller Park, Lewisburg, to reminisce, grieve, and support each other.
In lieu of memorial gifts, donations can be made in James’s memory to a charity of choice, HospiceCare, or to the family to assist with expenses.
