UPPER GLADE- In softball, when one team doesn’t get a hit all night, there’s a good chance the other team will walk away with a victory.
Fortunately for Lady Cavalier fans, they were the ‘other team’ on Wednesday night.
Greenbrier West got a no-hitter from Brilee Redden– her second in a week and a half– and 13 strikeouts and a grand slam and six RBIs from Brooklyn Adkins, and the Lady Cavs shut down the Webster County Lady Highlanders 13-1 on the road.
West started hot and ended hotter with four runs in the first inning and seven in the sixth.
In that opening frame, the Cavs started with two quick outs against Webster pitcher Marangelee Rivera, and it looked as if the Highlanders were going to get off the field quickly.
But it turned out to be not so quick.
Redden singled and then Preslee Treadway walked. Adkins followed with a 2-run single to give the Cavs (7-4) an early 2-0 lead. A couple batters later, Ava Price singled to second base and brought home Adkins and Brooke Patterson scored on an error on the same play.
After one, Greenbrier West led 4-0.
Kenna Fields’ RBI single in the fourth and Patterson’s in the fifth put the Cavaliers up 6-0 and it was more than enough for Redden. Other than the six walks she permitted, Redden, again, was literally unhittable and has seemed to find her groove in what is a little past the halfway point of the season.
If there was any doubt over the outcome, West put it all to rest in the sixth frame.
Kyndall Taylor knocked in Ke. Fields to get the ball rolling and with the bases loaded three batters after, Adkins hit a long ball to left field that cleared the fence for her second grand slam of the season, and the Lady Cavaliers cruised to the victory.
Adkins finished the day 2-4 with the HR and those six runs driven in. Redden was 2-3 and scored three runs. Ke. Fields went 2-3 with a run and RBI, and Price drove in a run and scored another while going 2-4 as well.
West will face Doddridge County this Saturday, April 19 at home.
