LITTLE RIVER, SC- Make that a perfect 3-0 record for the Greenbrier East Lady Spartans.
East was all business in Myrtle Beach, SC and on Wednesday afternoon, April 17, completed their sweep of the spring break tournament by beating the Maple Grove Lady Dragons 13-5 in five innings.
To say Greenbrier East got off to a good start in this one would be the understatement of the 2025 season, although it was the Dragons that struck first.
Alex Caldwell reached base on a Spartan error to lead off the game and eventually scored during another error two batters later. After all the dust settled, at the end of the top half of the first inning, the Dragons led 3-0.
Talk about a short-lived advantage.
Greenbrier East came to bat and came ready to produce. Reagan Cline doubled to right to start things off then Ally Martin reached on an error which also brought Cline home. The next batter, Kennah Collins, singled home Martin and made the score 3-2, Maple Grove.
But the Spartans were just getting started.
Campbell Bundy followed Collins with a base hit and scored Collins, then Haylee Heaster walked. Maddie Baker would single home Bailee Birchfield and Liz Wooding ripped a 2-run triple to left field. Later on, still in the bottom of the first, Cline tripled and scored on Martin’s groundout, and Collins hit an inside-the-park-homerun to right field that capped the scoring. It was a 10-run inning and East led 10-3 after one.
The scoring stalled a little for both teams until the fourth frame when Savannah Weart scored on a passed ball at home plate and cut the Maple Grove Deficit to 10-5.
However, the Spartans were determined to get off the field quickly with a ‘W’ in hand. Maddie Baker hit an RBI single that scored Heaster and a couple batters later, Jenna Groves lined a hit to center that scored Haley Byars.
East closed things out on the defensive side that included a nice double play where shortstop Paige Totten caught a line drive and doubled up the runner at first.
East ran their season record to 11-6 and will head home to Greenbrier County with confidence and momentum on their side.
Cline went 3-4 with a triple, a double, two runs, and an RBI. Collins was 2-2 with a HR, two runs, and two knocked in. Bundy had two hits and an RBI, Baker had two hits, scored twice, and drove in two, and Groves continued her nice senior year with two hits and an RBI as well.
Neither Emily Pyles or Madilyn Wellman allowed an earned run and Wellman had two strikeouts on the day.
The Spartans will host the Pikeview Lady Panthers at home this Monday, April 21. First pitch is at 5:30 PM.
