Charleston, W.Va. (WVDN) – The West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) and the Common Ground Partnership recognize April as the Month of the Military Child. The month highlights continuing efforts to create a positive school climate and culture that meet the unique needs of military-connected children and families. In addition to hosting special activities throughout the month, many schools will participate in national “Purple Up Day” on April 11, 2025, with students, faculty and staff wearing purple as a show of support for military children.
The Month of the Military Child honors and celebrates the spirit of perseverance of military-connected students. On average, these children experience six-to-nine school transitions throughout their K-12 career. The WVDE and Common Ground Partnership work to alleviate the challenges that may arise from this experience.
In addition to “Purple Up Day,” schools will host other recognitions as part of Spirit Week, April 7-11, 2025. These activities recognize the contributions and positive impact of the United States military.
“Each child in our school system deserves the best care and consideration, and the Month of the Military Child provides an opportunity to recognize this community,” said Superintendent of Schools Michele L. Blatt. “These students demonstrate the exceptional ability to adjust to changes in their personal and family lives. We are here to support them and all students on their road to success.”
The WVDE will also present Purple Star Awards throughout the month. This recognition is presented to schools that have committed to supporting military children and their families in various ways. In West Virginia, 297 schools have been recognized with the Purple Star Award, and 16 counties have earned the distinction as a Purple Star District with 100% of their schools recognized as Purple Star Schools.
The Common Ground Partnership — consisting of military, government and community-based organizations — continues to support military families throughout April and beyond. Visit the WVDE website for resources and the Month of the Military Child Toolkit.
