FAIRLEA- The Greenbrier East Lady Spartans 2025 home opener was going well until the sixth inning on Tuesday night, March 25 at the Spartan Field in Fairlea and East ended up falling to the Shady Spring Lady Tigers 5-3.
In that sixth frame, with East leading 3-2, the Tigers scored two runs to take the final lead and added one insurance score in the seventh inning as well.
Greenbrier East (2-2) took an early 1-0 lead in the first after Reagan Cline walked, went to second on a passed ball, then scored on an Ally Martin groundout. The Spartans had an opportunity for more, but Jenna Groves lined into an unlucky double play and the Tigers got out of the inning with limited damage.
Shady jumped ahead 2-1 in the second off Spartan starting pitcher Madison Wellman and that score remained until the bottom half of the fourth inning when East came back up to the plate on offense.
Liz Wooding led off the fourth with a single and Haley Byars followed with a base hit of her own. Four batters later, and with the bases loaded with Spartans, Martin hit a 2-run double to center field that put East back in front at 3-2. Campbell Bundy lined out hard to end the inning.
Raegan Lane hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth that knotted the score at 3-all. Shortly thereafter, Bryanna Shrewsberry stole third base and then stole home successfully and Shady (1-0) took a 4-3 lead.
They would add that one run in the seventh as Tigers pitcher Jenna Joyce closed the game out by striking out the East side in the bottom half of the seventh.
Bundy led East with two hits on the evening. Martin was 1-4 with all three RBIs for the Spartans.
Wellman went the full seven innings and scattered 15 hits but gave up just four earned runs.
Greenbrier East is back in action this Thursday, March 27 when they travel to Bluefield.
