1925– 100 Years Ago
On March 4th Calvin Coolidge will become President of the United States in his own right, by virtue of being elected by the people. General John L. Hines, brother of W. R. Hines of White Sulphur Springs will head the parade and there will be several hundred soldiers and civilians in the parade.
Large Tree
The monarch popular on the Coleman timber tract on Laurel Creek, above Beckwith, Fayette County, was felled by loggers last week. It proved to be larger than previous estimates, and it is now calculated it will saw out more than 10,000 feet of boards. Fourteen men stood on the stump of this mammoth tree and had their picture taken. There was room for a half dozen more.

The Meadow River Lumber Company is completing the rebuilding of the sawmill that was burned last August. The mill has been much enlarged. There are three large band saws. It is now the largest hardwood mill in the United States.

Auto 4-H Club
The Pumpkin Center Stickers 4-H Club of Auto held its regular monthly meeting at the Woodland School with Bobby Sexton, president, presiding. During the business session, the club secretary was instructed to write a letter to the county nurse at Lewisburg that she conduct a physical examination of the 4-H Club and students of the school in general.
Fortune Told
Shortly before Christmas, 1947, Mrs. A. N. Weaver of Fairmont lost a diamond ring in a department store. Mrs. Weaver said that about a year ago she was told by a fortune teller not to worry that the ring would be returned by a dark-haired, dark-eyed woman named Alice. The ring was found by a clerk February 22 while the store was being remodeled. The clerk is dark-eyed and dark-haired. Her name – Mrs. Alice Wegman.

Registrars of voters will not make a house-to-house canvass this year, it was decided by the County Court, thus saving the taxpayers over $7,000. Persons desiring to register or change their registration may do so by appearing in the office of the county clerk

Congress Can Do Little To Prevent Unemployment
The recession is worse than indicated by even one of the bleakest government measures, according to a Federal Reserve study. “It shows we are in for the worst recession since we started calculating the index” 22 years ago, the bank said.

Monte Carlo 2000 Raises $30,000 for Carnegie Hall
Carnegie Hall was the big winner at Monte Carlo 2000. More than 800 people attended the annual fundraising gala at The Greenbrier. Proceeds from the even reached $30,000 and directly benefit the numerous programs at Carnegie Hall.
Planners Sign Off On One Gateway’s Plan For Mall
The Lewisburg Planning Commission approved the final site plan for a mall to be constructed off of Route 219 beside WalMart and behind Arby’s. The project was presented to the planners by a group known as One Gateway Associates.
Kilcollin, Hypes On All-State Team
Katie Kilcolin, a junior, and Grier Hypes, a senior, were named to the All-State Volleyball teams. Kilcolin was named first team all-state, and Hypes was named captain of the second team.
