Martha S. Nolen

Martha S. Nolen, 88, of Lewisburg, passed away Friday, February 28, 2025, at Lewisburg Healthcare Center in Ronceverte.

Martha found beauty in everything, from the soft pedals of a flower to the warmth of a well-timed joke. With sharp wit, a kind heart, and a love for all things yellow, Martha brought light and laughter to those around her.

Born May 2, 1936, she was the daughter of the late, William and Violet Sprouse. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Nolen; brother, Howard Sprouse; sister, June Hiser; half sister, Freda May Smalley; half brother, Layton Stringer; and nephew, Lonnie Springer. She was the last member of her generation.

She retired as a secretary from the former McClung Furniture in Lewisburg, where her cheerful presence and attention to detail made a lasting impact. She had a deep appreciation for flowers, especially yellow ones, which reflected her bright and joyful spirit. Her humor and kindness made her a cherished friend and family member, always ready to bring a smile to someone’s face. Having no children of her own, she filled very special and active roles in the lives of her nieces and nephews of many generations, all of whom miss her dearly.

Left to cherish her memory are nephews and niece, Greg Hanson (Linda) of Heathsville, VA, Mike Hanson (Cathie) of Panama City, FL, Lynn Sprouse (Debbie) of Rockingham, VA, Doug Sprouse (Katrina) of Ronceverte, WV, Bill Gumm (Kay) of Smoot, WV, Paul Smalley of Kanawha City, WV, Linda Jean Pauley of Charleston, WV; great- nieces and great-nephews; and several great-grand-nieces and great-grand-nephews.

Services will be held with speaker Bill Wallace at the Wallace Memorial Mausoleum in Clintonville on Wednesday, March 5th, at 2 p.m., with the eulogy being read, by her request, from beloved great-nieces, Amanda Morris and Jennifer Sprouse. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the mausoleum. Martha’s family invites those who knew her to honor her memory by wearing a touch of yellow or bringing a flower to celebrate the bright, beautiful soul she was.
