CHARMCO – One of the rarest accomplishments in a Cavalier’s career is joining the 1,000-point club. Greenbrier West has fielded girls’ basketball teams since 1975 and after last Tuesday’s win over Shady Spring, only six players have ascended to the 1,000-point threshold. The list is a select who’s who of Cavalier scorers.
Gina Osborne was the first to reach 1,000, and as fate would have it, she did it by scoring 23 points against Shady Spring on October 13,1987. Osborne would go on to score 1,335 points and lead Greenbrier West to the 1987 Class AA state championship game.
Osborne’s teammate, Sham Smith, hit the 1,000-point mark the next season against, you guessed it, Shady Spring. Smith poured in 23 points on November 11, 1988, to join the club and finished her career with 1,090 points.
Andy Manspile was the third Lady Cavalier to join the 1,000-point club. Manspile poured in 30 points in a two-point win over Meadow Bridge on February 14, 1998. Manspile finished off her career with 1,090 points and back-to-back regional championship game appearances.
The first three ladies to ascend to 1,000 points did so in three-year high school careers. Greenbrier West became a four-year high school in 2008, and it still took twelve more years until another girl joined the exclusive club. Kenley Posten hit the mark with a 30-point effort against Meadow Bridge on February 4, 2020. Posten concluded her career with 1,182 points and a Region III co-final appearance.
Preslee Treadway was the fifth Lady Cavalier to hit 1,000 points, doing so in the final game of her third season. Treadway not only joined the 1,000-point club, but she also set the girls record for points in a game with 46 in a three-point loss in the Region III co-final.
Fast-forward to Maddie Fields. Fields accomplished the feat in her 90th game, a 64-49 home win over Shady Spring. In the victory, Fields scored a team-high 23 points and pushed her career total to 1,002 points. Fields has been on a tear of sorts since posting a triple-double on January 31. The senior forward scored 16 points, pulled down 11 rebounds, and collected 10 steals. The statistical anomaly is the first I’ve been able to find in all my girls basketball research. Fields narrowly missed a second triple-double on February 4 in a loss to Summers County with 20 points, 11 rebounds, and 9 steals.
Her 329 points scored this season are a career high, putting her season average at 16.5 points per game. Fields has increased her scoring output every season of her career. For West to make a tournament run under the new regional format, the Cavaliers will only have to win two games. Fields scoring contributions will be crucial. First, Richwood comes to Charmco. Fields and her teammates are 7-0 against the Lumberjacks in their careers, and they’ll want to get off to a good start Friday night at John C. Estep Gymnasium. Fields has averaged 13.4 points per game against Richwood over her career.
For all her prowess on the court, Fields signed her Letter of Intent to play softball for Potomac State back on Friday, December 13. Greenbrier West has benefitted greatly from the play of the multi-sport
athlete in both sports. Fields led the Cavaliers with five triples and 30 RBI in 2024. She tied for the team lead in triples in 2023. Triples are generally regarded as the toughest hit to record in stick and ball sports. Fields has electric speed on the floor and the basepaths. Her speed, as well as her other attributes, will be relied upon for tournament runs in both sports.
