CHARMCO W.Va. (WVDN) – Police have arrested two individuals in relation to a financial fraud investigation in Charmco. The West Virginia State Police released the following information:
“On Wednesday, January 8, 2025, Sergeant N.J. Hersman received a complaint related to fraudulent activity on a bank account belonging to Jane Boggess (82-year-old female from Charmco, WV) and her now deceased husband, George Boggess (87-year-old male from Charmco, WV). Sergeant Hersman, during his investigation, determined that Steven Simpson (40-year-old male from Charmco, WV) and Ashley Simpson (34-year-old female from Charmco, WV) had performed construction work on the home of Mr. and Mrs. Boggess. Mr. and Mrs. Simpson then used the routing and account number from a check they received to make fraudulent ACH payments to accounts of their own. The fraudulent transactions went unnoticed by Mrs. Boggess for quite some time until her account was overdrawn. The fraudulent activities had occurred from August 2023 until December 2024 and totaled approximately $36,000.00.
“On Friday, February 21, 2025, Mr. and Mrs. Simpson were arrested and charged with Computer Fraud (103 counts), Financial Exploitation of an Elderly Person, and Fraudulent Schemes. Mr. Simpson is currently being held at the Southern Regional Jail on a $50,000-dollar secure bond along with Mrs. Simpson who is being held on a $100,000-dollar secure bond. Sergeant Hersman was assisted by First Sergeant B.S. Burner from BCI during this investigation.”
