FAIRLEA- On a rainy Saturday afternoon at the Spartan Gym in Fairlea, the Greenbrier East Lady Spartans welcomed in the Logan Lady Wildcats in anticipated matchup of matinee basketball.
The game lived up to its billing and even made some Spartan fans nervous, but in the end, Greenbrier East held on for an impressive 58-51 victory.
Logan came into the game with a record of 14-5 and proved that it was no fluke as they gave East one of their biggest challenges so far this year.
East (18-1) got on the scoreboard first when Ava Workman capitalized off a Wildcat turnover and went in for an uncontested layup. Hannah Fuller scored on the next Spartan possession as East led 4-2 early. Logan got a layup from Jaycee Blair and a long 3 from Addyson Amick to take a 7-4 lead about midway through. The Wildcats then settled in and went on an 8-0 run over the next couple of minutes, but Kennedy Stewart helped East counter with a 7-0 run that was capped by a buzzer beating 3 from Workman to end the first quarter, and East trailed just 15-14.
Liz Wooding played arguably her best few minutes of basketball this season in the second.
She hit a short jumper early in the quarter and gave the Spartans a 22-20 lead a few minutes later off a drop step spin move for an old fashioned three-point play. Halle Crouse kept the Wildcats close though as the senior shooting guard poured in 10 second quarter points as Logan held a 30-28 advantage at halftime.
After an acrobatic finish from Workman to tie it up and an Amick 3 for Logan, Jada Waller scored two consecutive baskets to give East a 34-33 lead early in the third. But Amick answered with another triple a couple trips later down the floor, but she also got a technical after a charge call on her teammate Bam Mosby’s charge foul. Stewart calmly knocked down the two technical free throws and East led 38-36 headed to the fourth.
Amick did her best to keep Logan (14-6) in the game and her 3 with five minutes left put the Wildcats ahead 44-42. But with the score 50-49 with just over two minutes to go, Workman hit a clutch 3 from the right wing to extend to a two-possession lead. Eventually, Stewart knocked down four straight free throws to close the game in the win column for East.
Stewart finished the day with 18 points and went 10-for-10 from the charity stripe. Waller had a good game with 15 points, and Workman added 12.
Amick led Logan with 18 and Crouse scored 15.
