FAIRLEA- Whether fans head to Spartan Stadium for a Friday night football game or grab a seat inside the confines of the Spartan Gym in Fairlea, one name that is called out over both PA systems is Spartan junior Brody Hamric.
Hamric, who set football passing records at Eastern Greenbrier Middle School, has been one of the more consistent athletes the school has had over the last few years. He is a 2-time honorable mention all-state selection in football and is currently in his second year as a starter on the basketball team where this year he is averaging around 14 points per game.
The one thing that stands out about Hamric is his unselfishness and his willingness to do whatever it takes to win a game. Whether he is passing the basketball and setting up his teammates, driving to the basket for a shot in the paint, or pulling up for a deep 3, Hamric’s redeeming quality is putting a number in the win column, and that attitude is infectious among his Spartan teammates.
“I like our team because we all want to see each other do well,” Hamric said.
The guard credits his play to his own improvements and his leadership skills that he has developed over the years.
“I think I’ve gotten faster, stronger, and smarter. The game has slowed down for me,” Hamric stated.
“As l’ve gotten older, I have definitely become a leader in both sports. I lead by example and being vocal,” he added.
Being a two-sport athlete that plays in back-to-back seasons, for some, the transition from football right into basketball can be an adjustment period. But for Hamric, it is natural for him due to the work he constantly puts in.

“I play AAU after the basketball season up until the football season, and even during the football season I am in the gym getting shots up. The biggest challenge is taking care of my body and staying healthy because football is such a physical sport. Also, basketball conditioning is different from football,” Hamric explained.
Another factor in Hamric’s career is the influence and impact from his parents, Jon and Hilary.
“My dad has always pushed me to stay in the gym and get better. My mom has always supported me through the highs and the lows no matter what,” Hamric said.
So, when it comes to this season, and the Spartans chances to do something special, Hamric said getting that special trip to Charleston in mid-March is his main goal right now.
“A goal and expectation is to have a winning season. Something that would make this season a success is to make it to the state tournament. I like our team so making it to the state tournament is a possibility,” he said.
One thing is for certain when it comes to Hamric’s legacy he will leave at Greenbrier East. His coaches will have had a huge influence by preparing him not only for play, but for off the court as well.
“My coaches have made me the leader I am today and constantly keep my confidence up. My coaches support me in both off seasons. My football coaches come to my basketball games and my basketball coaches come to my football games. Coaches from both teams teach me accountability but most importantly to keep God first,” Hamric concluded.
