Morgantown, W.Va. (WVDN) – The West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) and West Virginia University (WVU) hosted the Region 1 competition of the 2025 Academic Showdown in Morgantown today. Two teams claimed top honors and will compete again in Charleston. Morgantown High School Team 2 (first place) and Morgantown High School Team 1 (second place) have advanced to the April 30 finale at the West Virginia Culture Center.
The WVDE hosted teams from the following schools at WVU:
- Doddridge County High School
- John Marshall High School
- Magnolia High School
- Morgantown High School
- University High School
- Wheeling Park High School
“It was awesome to have this opportunity to participate among our fellow schools. We watch YouTube videos, read books, take notes on articles and read current events every day to keep up with the news,” said Morgantown High School Team 2 Team Captain Julianna Ferrell. “I’m proud to represent the academic sector of our school. Morgantown High School has such an intelligent student population.”
“This competition continues to showcase the academic prowess of West Virginia students. It puts their skills to the test, develops their self-confidence and improves their ability to think critically,” said State Superintendent of Schools Michele L. Blatt. “The talent, teamwork and pursuit of excellence demonstrated by these students is proof that the future of the Mountain State is very bright.”
The Showdown is a partnership between the WVDE, the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History and West Virginia Public Broadcasting.
