CHARMCO – Greenbrier West celebrated Senior Night on Monday by notching an important Region III win over rival Webster County. The matchup of top ten Class A schools didn’t disappoint. Three Lady Cavaliers collected double-doubles in the win, evening West’s record at 6-6 with nine games remaining. More importantly, it gives the Cavaliers a perfect 4-0 record in the region with no further regional matchups on the schedule.
Preslee Treadway and Maddie Fields got the ball rolling for Greenbrier West. Treadway owned the paint early and when not scoring a field goal, found her way to the foul line. Fields created scoring opportunities of her own by creating havoc with her defense. The senior duo led the Cavaliers to a 7-0 lead. That lead increased to 12-7 before Webster County made a run. Going to full court pressure, the Highlanders fought their way back and shaved advantage to 14-11 at the end of the first quarter. Webster County’s junior point guard Maddie Williams had four points while three teammates added a bucket apiece.
Treadway and Williams battled back and forth in the second quarter with West never relinquishing their lead. Treadway did most of her damage from the foul line, going 5-6 in the quarter and 7-10 in the first half. It was a stark contrast from her free throw shooting woes in Friday night’s loss at Pocahontas County, and the senior forward posted nine points in the quarter. Williams countered with eight points for Webster County, with her damage coming via the three-point line. After starting the game 0-5 from three, Williams drilled a pair of three pointers and added a pair of free throws for an eight-point quarter.
The Cavaliers, however, got added point production from Brilee Redden. Redden came in off the bench after head coach Mark Agee started his five seniors as part of the Senior Night celebration. The role seemed to suit Redden as she drained two threes and score 10 points. Fields went 3-3 and collected six points as the Cavaliers put up a 25 spot. The Highlanders got scoring pop from a bench player as well. Elizabeth Case checked in and did a lot of damage around the basket. Case put up six points from the floor and went 2-2 from the foul line. West led 39-33 at the break.
The third quarter saw Greenbrier West keep going inside to Treadway as the senior worked hard around the basket. Treadway collected a pair of made baskets and went 5-6 from the line to post another nine points. Not to be outdone, Fields kept pace with her teammate and the senior forward added eight points to the Cavalier effort. Redden, enjoying her best scoring night of the season, added a three. The Highlanders countered with Williams and Case, with the
pair scoring six and four points, respectively. Clevenger added three more, but the West lead was 59-50 after three quarters.
The fourth quarter belonged to Redden and senior guard Haylee Ward. Redden dribbled around and through double teams and traps and attacked the basket over and over, scoring nine points and essentially running away from the Highlanders. Ward was fouled on three different occassions and calmly knocked down all six free throws. Treadway added seven points on a field goal and 5-6 shooting from the foul line. Williams and case each scored five points for Webster County but got little extra scoring help from the remainder of the roster. Greenbrier West outscored the Highlanders 24-17 to take an 83-67 victory.
Three Lady Cavaliers posted double-doubles in the win. Treadway picked up 33 points and 12 rebounds, her second consecutive 33-point game, tying her season-best scoring effort. Redden tallied 23 points and 11 rebounds, her season high in both categories. Fields added 21 points and 10 rebounds.
The seniors recognized before the game were Abigail Thomas, Keylee Clere, Lacey Critchley, Haylee Ward, Preslee Treadway, and Maddie Fields. Four-year seniors have been a part of 49 wins, 35 losses, two sectional championships, one regional championship, and the first state tournament appearance since 1987.
Greenbrier West (6-6) heads to Summer County Tuesday night at 7:30. Webster County (9-5) hosts Clay County Wednesday night.
