25 Years Ago…
Landon Davis, a student in Donna Ream’s kindergarten class at Alderson Elementary School, was named one of the county winners in this year’s young writers’ contest at the kindergarten level.

The National Merit Scholarship Program has named Nora E. Edwards a merit scholar.
She is the daughter of Daniel and Rebecca Edwards of Lewisburg.

Navy Seaman Basil A. Casey, son of Paul A. and Nancy L. Jackson of Lewisburg is serving in the Adriatic Sea near Bosnia aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington.

Cliff Myers, the manager of the Western Sizzlin located north of Lewisburg, was nominated as Manager of the Year for the Western Sizzlin system.

Lewisburg Elementary School fifth grade DARE students Charlie Baldwin, Dwain Marchant, and Sarah Schriefer were the winning entrants in a DARE license plate design contest.

Kent Modlin, son of Robert and Jill Modlin of Lewisburg, is competing for the 1996 West Virginia Wesleyan track and field team. He is a former standout of Greenbrier East High School.

White Sulphur and Ronceverte emerged the champions of the Frankford Ruritan All-Star Tournament, which drew to a close on March 9.
In winning the fifth-grade championship, Ronceverte overwhelmed Alderson 49-22, while the sixth-grade squad defeated a very determined Frankford team 46-38 for top honors in their division.

Cynthia Ann Beane of Gap Mills has received notification that her name and biography will be included in the 1997-1998 edition of Marquis’ Who’s Who in American Women.

Chasity Daniels of Caldwell recently enrolled in the American Quarter Horse Association Horseback Riding Program.

White Sulphur Springs Family Care Center’s staff, residents, and family members are honoring the facility’s administrator, Robert McClintic II, for his contributions to the long-term care industry.
March 18, 1971
50 Years Ago…
The Taylor Room at The Greenbrier hosted a recognition luncheon for Miss Sharon Hayes, West Virginia State 4-H winner in home improvement project.
She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Hayes of Lewisburg and is a freshman at West Virginia University.

Robert Kesterson took over the management of the Lewisburg A&P Store Monday morning, succeeding Henry Lindsey, who retired.

The Rev. Connie Bland of Oberlin Kan., has accepted the pastorate of the First Baptist Church of Fairlea.
Mr. and Mrs. Bland and two children are expected to arrive in Fairlea about April 1.

Mrs. Margaret Knapp Messer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Knapp of Alderson, was among the 124 seniors who were named to the dean’s honor list at Berea College, Berea, Ky., for the first term of the 1970-71 school year.

Army Staff Sgt. Sonne C. Wylie, son of Mr. and Mrs. Madison B. Wylie Sr. of White Sulphur Springs, was recently assigned to the 173rd Airborne Brigade in Vietnam as an operations sergeant.

The steeple of the Lewisburg United Methodist Church was removed last week in preparation for the installation of a new aluminum one.
The steeple was erected in 1904 when the church was built. The bell, which has been in its location since 1904, was manufactured in Baltimore, Md., in 1886 and is estimated to weigh about 1,000 pounds and is cast in bronze.

James W. Brown of Ronceverte has been recognized by the C&P Telephone Company of West Virginia for 20 years of service. He is employed at the Lewisburg plant of the company.

A group of determined Greenbrier Countians was in Washington recently to meet with top officials of the Economic Development Administration and the Housing and Development Administration in an effort to secure top-level approval of funds to build a sewage disposal system for the Lewisburg area, now estimated to cost $5,000,000.
March 21, 1946
75 Years Ago…
Seven contestants from the 34 high schools of the Seventh American Legion District met in Lewisburg to complete in the American Legion Oratorical Contest.
Miss Virginia Walker of Greenbrier High School, Ronceverte, was the winner.

Philip M. Cockrean of near Lewisburg had two ewes to produce seven lambs this season — one having three and the other four.

Want to know about Army life? Ask M/Sgt. C.C. Conyers, stationed at Greenbrier Military School for 24 years.
The master sergeant enlisted for the 11th time last Nov. 25, and since he had a five-year period from 1940-45, this gives him a total of over 32 years, 3 months, with two more to go.
He challenges any other enlisted man in the state of West Virginia on length of service on active duty with the Army.

Greenbrier Valley Hospital’s baby department became a “No Man’s Land” last week when six consecutive births turned out to be of the “weaker” sex.
March 19, 1921
100 Years Ago…
The preliminary organization of the Greenbrier Valley Fair was effected in Lewisburg at a meeting of citizens who have for weeks been advocating the establishment of a fair for this section of West Virginia. Two locations were suggested — Ronceverte citizens offered the Bruce Hollow land, while others proposed the Driscol farm, two miles north of Ronceverte. It was decided without delay to accept the Driscol land, which comprises about 41 acres.

A new department store has opened in Ronceverte, Plumley-Hulme Co. “We Buy and Sell for Cash Only.”
***
The P.A. George & Co. of Ronceverte advertises a very large assortment of Victrola records for sale. The public is encouraged to come in and make their selections early.
