Cross-word Puzzle Craze
As a result of the abnormal popularity of dictionaries due to the cross-word puzzle craze, the Los Angeles, Cal., public library has been compelled to set a time limit of five minutes on the use of the dictionary by any one person at one time. In case of an argument among those in the waiting line, parties to the differences are requested to “ please settle differences at the librarian’s desk.”
Meadow Bluff District
The first settlement in Meadow Bluff District, Greenbrier County, was made on the waters of Big Clear Creek in 1773 by William McClung.The first grist mill was erected by John Coggin on the waters of Little Clear Creek in 1790. The first saw mill was erected in 1848 on the same creek by William McFarland.
Turkeys To Philadelphia
Four cars of turkeys were shipped to Philadelphia from Renick just before the Christmas holidays and every car averaged 1100 turkeys besides some other fowls. The price paid for turkeys was 45 cents a pound.

Banker Hash-Slinger
A former millionaire banker, scion of one of Germany’s richest and most influential families starts work as a counterman in a Brooklyn luncheonette. George Mamroth, 54, who arrived in New York on the S. S General McCrae, is one of the last of an illustrious family of German bankers. The luncheonette is operated by his 26-year old son, Peter.
Peter who was imprisoned in the dread Nazi camps of Auschwitz and Mathausen was liberated in 1945 in Austrian by U. S. troops. His mother perished in a slave labor camp. His father escaped in 1938 to Holland when Hitler started rounding up Berlin’s Jews for deportation.

Lewisburg’s The Baby Shop offers Birdseye Diapers at $1.98 a dozen, Boy’s bibbed overalls, Sanforized denim full cut at $1.69, and Judy Kent girls’ blouses at $1.79.

Maynard Johnson and Dr. George L. Lemon are the new “Baby Members” of the Lewisburg Rotary club. The local club now numbers 69 members.

Prince Charles Thinks Seriously Of Marriage
Prince Charles says life is rather lonely for a future king and is finally thinking seriously of getting married. He says he now looks at women and begins to “wonder if one could ever marry her or something like that.”
Groceries May Be Exempt From Tax
Gov. Arch Moore’s proposal to exempt groceries from the 3 per cent sales tax is nothing new. He first proposed it in 1969. The Democrats believe the lower income group should be afforded the exemption, rather than those more able to pay.
Sadat Calls For Withdrawal From Syria
President Anwar Sadat of Egypt has called for an Israel withdrawal from Syria, Egypt and Jordan to set the stage for renewed Middle East peace talks in Geneva.

Lady Spartans Drop Heartbreaker
The Lady Spartans dropped a heart-breaker to the Flying Eagles losing 57-56 at home. Jessica’s White’s 22 points led the way for Greenbrier East. Also scoring were Katie Kilcolin with 9, Ashley Rapp and Amanda Bruno with 8 each, Norma Gary 5 and Amanda Workman 4.
Monroe Board Approves Boys’ Soccer Program For JMHS
James Monroe High School will offer boys’ soccer as a fall sport beginning in the 2000-2001 school year, based on a decision made at the regular meeting of the Monroe County Board of Education.
Julian’s Restaurant Hosts Event For GVT Campaign
Greenbrier Valley Theatre’s board of directors recently acknowledged a “Wine Tasting with Antipasto” event hosted by Julian’s Restaurant and Coffee Bar. Proceeds from the event were donated as a gift to the GVT in support of the “Raise the Roof” campaign.
