HICO – Forgive Greenbrier West if they opened the 2024-25 girls’ basketball season a little on the rusty side. Senior Preslee Treadway, less than a week-removed from helping the Cavaliers win the Class A volleyball state championship, had only three days to devote solely to basketball. Given Treadway’s team-high 25-point output, wait until she gets her basketball legs under her.
Greenbrier West dropped their season debut 65-58 in Hico on Monday night despite Treadway’s output. The Lady Cavaliers kept it close in the first half, battling back from a 21-16 first quarter deficit to trail by two, 30-28 at halftime. Midland Trail pulled away in the third quarter, however, outdistancing West 22-13 to build a 52-41 advantage heading into the final frame. The Lady Cavaliers outscored the Patriots 17-13 in the fourth quarter but came up short in their comeback attempt.
In addition to Treadway’s 25-point outburst, senior forward Maddie Fields chipped in with 13 points. Lacey Walker added 10 points for Greenbrier West, followed by Brilee Redden with 4, Samantha Holliday with 3, Haylee Ward 2, and Keylee Clere 1.
For the hosts, Rumor Barnhouse led all scorers with 26 points while Raelyn Morris added 13. Mackenzie Chaffin scored 9 points and Naveah Hall chipped in with 7. Whitney Bibb added 5 points, Jayla Barnhouse 2, Jessi Mooney 2, and Mary McGraw 1.
Greenbrier West (0-1) returns to action this Friday at home when they host Pocahontas County at 7:30. Midland Trail (2-0) hosts Shady Spring at 7:30 on Thursday night.
