CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WVDN) – West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR) and West Virginia State Parks invite outdoor enthusiasts to welcome 2025 with First Day Hikes across the state. These free guided hikes offer a wonderful way to connect with nature, explore park trails and start the year with fresh air and exercise. Participants of all ages are encouraged to dress appropriately for winter conditions, wear sturdy footwear and bring water and snacks.
“First Day Hikes are a special tradition for families and friends to enjoy together while taking in the beauty of Almost Heaven,” said WVDNR Director Brett McMillion. “We look forward to seeing everyone out on the trails to begin 2025 with adventure and appreciation for West Virginia’s great outdoors.”
Participants will also receive a West Virginia State Parks First Day Hike patch upon completing their hike.
First Day Hike Locations:
Blackwater Falls State Park
Date/Time: January 1, 2025, 10:30 a.m.
Meeting Point: Harold Walters Nature Center
Details: This 1.5-mile hike along the Balsam Fir Trail offers a serene walk through a northern hardwood forest, complete with interpretive stops. The hike takes 70-90 minutes to complete. Leashed dogs are welcome.
Cacapon Resort State Park
Date/Time: January 1, 2025, 10:00 a.m.
Meeting Point: Lodge
Details: Participants can choose between an easy hike on the Cabin Loop or a moderate hike incorporating the Central Trail.
Kanawha State Forest
Date/Time: January 1, 2025, 10:00 a.m.
Details: Castle Rock Loop Hike: Meet at the Forest Headquarters for a moderate 3.5-mile hike featuring scenic vistas from the Castle Rock Overlook. Spotted Salamander Trail: This 0.3-mile paved loop is ADA-accessible and perfect for all ages, with nearby amenities including restrooms, a playground, and a picnic area.
North Bend State Park
Date/Time: January 1, 2025, 2:00 p.m.
Meeting Point: Lodge lobby
Details: Enjoy a moderately difficult hike on the Giant Pine Trail, less than a mile long, through a picturesque evergreen landscape. Registration is encouraged.
Pipestem Resort State Park
Date/Time: January 1, 2025, 1:00 p.m.
Meeting Point: Championship Golf Course Pro Shop
Details: This family-friendly hike follows the cart path along holes 1 through 9 of the golf course. Cocoa, cookies, and a First Day Hike patch will be provided upon completion.
Twin Falls State Park
Date/Time: January 1, 2025, 1:00 p.m.
Meeting Point: Cliffside Trailhead
Details: The moderate 3.5-mile Cliffside Trail features rocky and strenuous sections, rhododendron thickets, and two prominent vistas. Sturdy shoes are recommended.
Tygart Lake State Park
Date/Time: January 1, 2025, 10:00 a.m.
Meeting Point: Campground
Details: Join the park naturalist to earn your West Virginia State Park First Day hiking patch! We will meet at 10AM in the campground to go on the School Bus Loop Trail for a hike of 2 miles.
Watoga State Park
Date/Time: January 1, 2025, 11:00 a.m.
Meeting Point: Activities Building
Details: This leisurely 2-mile hike includes stops to explore animal tracks and learn about the Civilian Conservation Corps’ history. Warm layers and sturdy boots are advised. Hot coffee and cocoa will be served after the hike.
Cedar Creek State Park
Date/Time: January 1, 2025, 10:00 a.m.
Meeting Point: Cedar Creek group camp
Details: Earn your West Virginia State Park First Day Hike patch! Take a guided hike on the Sugar Camp Trail. This is a 2 mile trail in the easy to slightly moderate range.
