HUNTINGTON- Tony Gibson is finally a head coach.
The former longtime assistant and defensive coordinator for West Virginia, Michigan, Arizona and most recently, N.C. State, was announced this past weekend as the new head coach for the Marshall Thundering Herd.
The Van, WV native played at Glenville State from 1991-94 after graduating from Gilmer County High School and spent a total of 14 years in Morgantown, first under former–and maybe future– coach Rich Rodriguez and then came back to WVU from 2014-2018 as the defensive coordinator under Dana Holgorsen. He has been at N.C. State for the past five seasons.
Gibson replaces Charles Huff who was highly successful at Marshall, but reports began to surface over the last few weeks that the Thundering Herd administration had no interest in renewing Huff’s contract for the 2025 season. Huff was just hired as the head coach for Southern Miss confirming those rumors as well.
Gibson’s reputation is that he is a player’s coach and a really strong recruiter. He recruited well for the Mountaineers and the Wolfpack. The amount of success he has at Marshall will be determined by the staff he puts together.
Marshall finished this season 10-3 and were champions of the Sun Belt Conference and are currently on a 7-game winning streak. They will play Army in the Independence Bowl on Dec. 28.
