WEST VIRGINIA (WVDN) – The Thanksgiving holiday is one of the busiest travel holidays of the year. Many people will be traveling to spend time with family and friends. The West Virginia State Police would like to offer a few tips to help ensure motorists reach their destinations safely.
Make sure your vehicle is in good mechanical condition before traveling. Check your vehicle’s tires, brakes, lights, fluids and windshield wipers before traveling.
Make sure everyone in the vehicle is wearing a seat belt, and children eight years of age and under are properly secured in child safety seats.
Keep your focus on the road while driving by stowing away electric devices. Utilize Bluetooth or hands free devices while communicating or using navigation features.
Keep an emergency safety kit in your vehicle consisting of first aid supplies, food, water and blankets. Keep your cellular devices charged so you can call for assistance if needed.
Check the weather forecast to ensure the road conditions will be safe for travel. Use extra caution while driving in inclement weather. Obey the speed limit and allow adequate time to reach your destination.
Don’t drink and drive. Don’t use drugs or take medication that can adversely affect your ability to safely operate a vehicle.
Make sure the driver of the vehicle has had adequate rest before driving and takes routine breaks while traveling to avoid fatigue.
We hope everyone has a safe and happy Thanksgiving holiday!
