CHARLESTON W.Va. (WVDN) – Mary Free Bed is expanding its rehabilitation services to West Virginia with the announcement of a partnership with Vandalia Health at Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC). Vandalia Health is headquartered in Charleston, WV, with locations in Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia. Vandalia Health has 1,530 beds in its system with more than 13,000 employees, 17 hospitals and over 190 locations.
The new partnership with Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation is located at Vandalia Health CAMC General Hospital in downtown Charleston, WV, and with its inpatient rehabilitation program. A joint operating agreement between the two organizations begins January 1, 2025, to start serving patients throughout West Virginia.
Currently, Vandalia Health has a 24-bed inpatient rehabilitation unit located at CAMC General Hospital. As part of the partnership, the two organizations will work together to build a new 50-bed rehabilitation hospital on the Vandalia Health CAMC General Hospital Campus.
The Mary Free Bed leadership team will manage the day-to-day operations, performance, processes and procedures, and work closely with Vandalia and CAMC leadership. This new partnership will help grow access to high quality rehabilitation services in West Virginia. The working collaboration will align clinical and operational practices as well as increase clinical skills to better service more complex patients.
“CAMC’s focus is always on how to best meet the needs of patients and our community,” said Glenn Crotty Jr., MD, President and CEO, Charleston Area Medical Center and Executive Vice President of Vandalia Health. “We are excited to work together with Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation to enhance clinical expertise and patient experience in rehabilitation care in West Virginia.”
Despite the geographical distance between the two organizations, their mission and values are closely intertwined. Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation and Vandalia Health both focus on patient-centered care, working to improve access, outcomes, and quality of life for all the communities they serve.
“In health care, alignment of mission and values is essential for successful partnerships,” said Bruce Brasser, Chief Operating Officer at Mary Free Bed. “This collaboration represents a shared vision of expanding access to world-class rehabilitation care for those who need it most.”
The joint operating agreement will be known as Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation at Vandalia Health CAMC General Hospital. It was developed out of a working relationship with the Mary Free Bed Advisory Group, which is dedicated to building national partnerships and consulting with organizations that share the same value and mission as Mary Free Bed.
