RAINELLE, W.Va. (WVDN) — Groundbreaking for the next phase of the Meadow River Rail Trail took place Friday, Nov. 1.
“We have a wonderful platform to move forward and to have an impact on a region that is significantly in need of uplifting as well as to recognize the beauty and the wealth of nature and opportunities for outdoor recreation that we have in the Meadow River Valley,” said Greenbrier County Commission President Tammy Tincher.
The Meadow River Rail Trail is a multi-use trail that runs along a former railroad line. The Greenbrier and Fayette County Commissions own the trail which includes approximately 24 miles “of corridor from Rainelle to Glade Creek.” Glade Creek is downstream from Nallen, West Virginia.
Phase III of the project will add 9 miles to the trail, connecting it to the Town of Rainelle. This new phase is expected to be completed and open in 2025.
Key partnerships have been essential to the project’s progress, with Greenbrier West High School playing a significant role in each phase. Students from the school are actively involved, contributing to the trail’s development in a myriad of ways. Several local officials attended the groundbreaking ceremony.
The groundbreaking ceremony was the latest milestone in the development of the trail. The project is expected to be completed in 2025.
Once the trail is completed, it will be the longest multi-use trail in West Virginia.
The Meadow River Rail Trail is a welcome addition to the region’s outdoor recreation offerings. It will provide a safe and enjoyable way for people to experience the beauty of the Meadow River Valley.
Adam Whanger, owner of Ace Hardware in Rainelle and White Sulphur Springs, donated 20 shovels for the event. Mountain Transit Authority provided transportation from municipal parking to the event.
