CHARLESTON, WV (WVDN) — West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey is co-leading with Iowa a bipartisan coalition of 15 states in a letter, encouraging Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel to stand strong on her decision to charge some anti-Israel protestors at the University of Michigan.

“It’s the cornerstone of any attorney general’s duty: to uphold the rule of law without fear or favor, or in this case, political influence,” Attorney General Morrisey said, writing in the letter that “even as some continue to try to drag your focus to irrelevant factors like politics and religion, we encourage you to stick by those hard decisions that you believe—based on an earnest review of the evidence—will protect public safety regardless of broader political implications. As Attorneys General, we owe the public nothing less.”

The Michigan Attorney General announced recently that 11 individuals are being charged during the dangerous protests at the university—some with trespassing, others with restricting and obstructing an officer, and others with disturbing the peace and malicious destruction of personal property.

Since that announcement, outside groups and political actors have criticized Nessel’s “charging choices as politically or religiously motivated,” and called for the charges to be dropped.

“As fellow Attorneys General, we write to encourage you to stand strong,” the coalition wrote.

Alaska, Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Louisiana, Montana, Nevada, New York, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas and Utah joined the West Virginia- and Iowa led letter.
