FAIRLEA- On a college football Saturday, it was the Greenbrier East boys’ soccer team that stole the show.

The Spartans jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first half against the state’s 2nd ranked Huntington Highlanders and held on to win by the exact same score.

August Vincent scored the Spartans first goal on a header shot and on the second score, Will Godby stole the ball from a Highlander and kicked it to the left side of the field where John Withrow finished with a shot in the top of the net, and it was all the Spartans needed.

East improves to 6-1-1 and this marks their biggest win of the young season so far. They are back in action this Tuesday night, Sept. 17 at George Washington for another shot at a marquee win, then host Woodrow Wilson on Thursday, Sept. 19.

On the girls’ side, the Lady Spartans suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday to Washington 4-0. They are now 6-1-1 and will play at Beckley against Woodrow Wilson this Tuesday, Sept. 17.
