LEWISBURG W.Va. (WVDN) — Mary Claire Ickes, a proud native of Lewisburg, West Virginia, shares her heartfelt reflections of her hometown and her experiences so far in the Generation West Virginia (GWV) Fellowship Class of 2024, highlighting the unique blend of community, creativity, and learning that has shaped her journey.

“I have always said Lewisburg gave me roots and wings,” Mary Claire reminisces, describing her upbringing filled with educational and cultural opportunities. From exploring the Greenbrier State Forest to performing at the Greenbrier Valley Theatre, her hometown provided a rich foundation that allowed her to thrive both locally and globally.

Mary Claire fondly recalls how local educators encouraged learning beyond traditional classrooms, turning places like the Greenbrier River and the Green Bank Telescope control room into her learning spaces. Her early involvement in the arts, from school chorus to theatre performances, taught her the value of creativity and teamwork.

Reflecting on her time so far in the current GENWV Fellowship Class, Mary Claire finds inspiration in the diverse stories of her peers and their collective mission to highlight West Virginia’s unique charm. A memorable challenge to “preach the gospel of West Virginia” has further fueled her dedication to promoting her home state. “As the fellowship continues, I am eager to see what our members will accomplish to further West Virginia,” she says. Mary Claire emphasizes the importance of preserving traditions while bringing a modern perspective to ensure longevity for future generations.

Mary Claire’s journey from Lewisburg to her current role in the fellowship program is a powerful testament to the profound influence of her hometown and the enduring spirit of West Virginia. Her story vividly illustrates the transformative power of community, the boundless possibilities of creativity, and the vital importance of cherishing one’s roots. Mary Claire embodies the resilience and passion that define West Virginia, inspiring others to honor their heritage while forging a path toward a vibrant future.
