Bitten By Copperhead
Clifford Harford was bitten on the finger by a copperhead while piling bark at the Williams & Pifer sawmill near Huntersville. Mr. Harford tied a string tightly around the finger and came to Marlinton for treatment. The pain and swelling were considerable. The proven emergency treatment for snake bite which should be done instantly is to open the wound with a knife causing it to bleed freely, suck out the poison. Bath the part freely with a strong salt solution. Permanganate of potash is the best local remedy if available. Stopping the circulation until the wound is washed is also helpful by tying a cord or bandage around the limb.
Blue Laws In Covington
Residents of Covington, Va., are protesting vigorously against the Sunday “Blue Laws,” recently put into effect at the order of State’s Attorney R. B. Stephenson. Not a single business place in Covington is permitted to be open on Sundays under the blanket ruling.
No Result At New York Yet
Nearing the end of two weeks in session no result has come from the Democratic National Convention in New York City, so far as the nomination of a candidate for president is concerned. William G. McAdoo has received steadily between 400 and 565 ½ votes on each ballot taken up to forty-odd, but seems unable to muster greater strength. John W. Davis, of West Virginia, has gained to upward of 200 votes from a few more than a hundred in the first balloting but nothing in the struggle of his friends seems to indicate ultimate success for the West Virginian.

1,000 Attend Morlunda
Morlunda Farms west of Lewisburg Saturday entertained 1,000 guests from eight states during it seventh annual spring field day which featured livestock judging contests and a barbecue luncheon.
Camp Alleghany Opens
Camp Alleghany for girls opened June 22. More than 200 persons, campers, counselors, cooks, caretakers, etc. will be camped during several weeks this summer about three miles above Caldwell on the Greenbrier River. The campers will be engaged in a large number of summer sports, including boating and swimming.
To Move
The Greenbrier Motor Company, local Dodge and Plymouth dealers, will move to their new building in Fairlea next week. The building is located on U. S. Route 2190 in Fairlea, between Lewisburg and Ronceverte.

Juan Peron Dies At 78
Crowds of Argentines massed in downtown Buenos Aires today to mourn the death of Juan Domingo Peron, a symbol of strong man rule in Latin America and one of the world’s most charismatic leaders. The 78-year old Argentine died Monday of heart failure, leaving his 43-year-old wife, Maria Estella, a former cabaret dancer, as the Western Hemisphere’s first woman president.
Leaders Sign Summit Pacts
President Nixon and Lenoid I. Brezhev signed agreements limiting nuclear testing and defensive missile deployments at the conclusion of their summit meeting today but acknowledged failure to curb the offensive nuclear arms race.
Patients Moved To New Facilities
When the Greenbrier Valley Hospital of Ronceverte moved into its new facilities last Saturday, Mrs. Mary Boggs of Ronceverte was the first to be transferred to the Fairlea quarters. The first mother-baby combination to be transferred were Mrs. Mary Byer of Caldwell and son, Julian Russell, Jr.

Farmers Encouraged To Start Paperwork For Possible Drought-Related Assistance
West Virginia is experiencing some of the driest weather it has seen since 1988. Many farmers are having to seek alternative water sources for their livestock, have seen their hay production cut dramatically, and wonder if spring seeded crops will make it past the seedling stage. While it is too early to tell how drastic losses may be in 1999, producers can prepare themselves for possible assistance from state or federal sources.
Governor Announces $25 Million Surplus In Reserve Fund
Gov. Cecil H. Underwood last week announced that state government ended the fiscal year with a $25 million surplus in the general reserve fund. The governor said the ability of the state to close the year with a surplus despite a 10% decline in severance taxes demonstrates the depth of the diversity in the West Virginia economy.
Carnegie Hall Kids’ College Underway In Lewisburg
The 7th annual Carnegie Kids’ College is underway. More than 150 students are enrolled in this year’s all-star line-up of cool classes and wacky workshops. During the Chimes, Mirror and Tiles class, student (L to R) Christine McClunb, Sarah Brown, Aleander Dennis, Alex Moyers and Amber Wilson help each other apply glazes to their individual tiles in the new Carnegie Hall Pottery Studio.
