RONCEVERTE W.Va. (WVDN) – When you visit the River City, Ronceverte, you will see a slew of new additions to town. A new farmer’s market, a new splash pad and this food truck turned brick-and-mortar delight on Edgar Avenue. Popping up next to The Sportsman Tavern, where Flavor Mutt once was, Brittany McCulley and Lee Carter will have some sweet eats waiting for you in their new Dawg House.
This is far from punishment, being sent to this dog house. This is a dream that came to fruition over a few years, a lot of sweat and tears, and a whole lot of hard work. Starting with a small food cart, the kind you see on the corners of Manhattan streets, McCulley would find herself at farmer’s markets, festivals and any other venue that would allow food trucks. By attending these events, she made some good friends and a barrage of new business leads and the most notable to her was being asked to cater the Healing Appalachia Festival. It’s notable due to the fact that her partner, Lee Carter, lost his own son, John, so being in the company of so many who share the pain and struggles, being welcomed with open arms and being successful enough to purchase a food truck was absolute serendipity. As a phoenix rising from the ashes, the two partners went headlong into the future, securing a home for their passion for food.
Carter and McCulley save every penny and put it right back into their business venture, which to the delight of West Virginians, is now accessible both at their new spot daily and on the road, as well. You can still find them at festivals and such with their bright red food truck, preparing some of the best specialty hot dogs ever, local beef sliders, soups, sandwiches, appetizers and the best darn drunken burger in the valley! They support locally, like so many other small business owners, by using Greenbrier Valley Brewing beers in their beer cheese that smothers their burgers in cheesy goodness. Their crab dip appetizer is one among many but has a special something to it, pretzel bites and nachos galore, is enough to get folks running to The Dawg House. McCulley’s motto is “Helping others where I can. It’s not just about money. It’s knowing we offer quality food at [affordable prices] for our fellow West Virginians. I care about my employees. I have to make it because they count on me, and they come first.”
The Dawg House is well on its way to satisfying the trivia nerds next door and the River City wanderer. You can find The Dawg House at 683 Edgar Avenue, Ronceverte, during these business hours (subject to change, seasonally): Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 12-6 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 12-8 p.m.
