LEWISBURG- Former Greenbrier East standout athlete Adam Seams recently had a tough choice to make.
Arguably the best soccer player to walk the halls of Greenbrier East High School and a member of the only soccer state championship team at the school, Seams started at WVU Tech in the fall of 2023 with scholarships to play soccer and basketball and just finished his freshman year.
However, beginning his sophomore year in 2024-25, the former Spartan decided to give up playing soccer and focus solely on the hardwood from this point forward.
Seams stressed for a while over the decision and admitted it was extremely tough on him, but he explained his outcome of reasoning.
“Yes, it hurts to give it up something I love and have loved since I was three. This decision was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made in life which sounds silly, but it was,” Seams said.
“I had a rough experience this year in soccer but got to play. I didn’t play basketball thinking I was going to transfer but I am not. Why? Well, I want to say the only reason other than money is the Lord. The Lord has a plan for me that I honestly don’t know about but what I know is he’ll get me through it. There are hard seasons in life, and this was a hard season because the dream was playing division one soccer. I was blessed enough to get the opportunity to do that from VMI. I loved it there, the coach and players, but I just couldn’t do that to myself and my family financially. It came to a decision of be in debt or play a sport you also love with no debt and graduate a year early. Also, though my faith has grown, and the Lord didn’t want me there, the Lord granted me 16 amazing years of soccer. I’m blessed that I received the offer but at the end of the day you have to do what’s best for the Lord, yourself, and your family,” Seams said with a heavy heart.
Seams is comfortable on the basketball team and thinks everything will work out like it should, but his faith is his main go-to for answers.
“The basketball coaches and players are great, and I love them, and I think I’ll be happy. I’ll graduate a year early and still get to do something I love. The Lord has a plan, and I can’t express enough how important prayer is and believing things will come. The Lord works in mysterious ways and all we can do is trust and believe in him. He knows best and though I have rough days and question why I had the ability and now I’m done, I know the Lord has my back and will get me to where I need to go,” Seams explained.
As to why he decided to stick it out in Beckley at WVU Tech rather than move on somewhere else?
“As always, all glory goes to God. Can’t thank my family, friends, and mentors enough for the support. Also, the community thanks for everything you didn’t only give me but all the athletes in this wonderful community,” Seams concluded.
