CHARMCO- The Greenbrier West Lady Cavaliers have a busy week ahead as the softball and spring sports seasons enter the stretch run.
Last week, Greenbrier West lost to Beckley in a game that featured a game-changing controversial call on the road, but the very next night the Cavs shutout Richwood 15-0 behind a big game from junior outfielder Maddie Fields. Fields had two triples and 5 RBIs in that one.
According to the official schedule, this week, the Cavs head to Buffalo on Monday, April 15, then host Princeton on Wednesday. They go to their border rivals, the James Monroe Lady Mavericks, on Thursday, then will face a tough double-header on the road this Saturday against Bridgeport and Doddridge County.
That is a lot of action to try and manage for head coach Tony Hinkle’s team.
At the time of this writing, West holds a record of 11-4. Hannah Sweet leads the team in batting average among girls with at least 30 official at-bats with a .455 clip. Brilee Redden (.425) and Fields (.400) also are among team leaders. Fields also leads the team with 25 RBIs and Preslee Treadway has three home runs that all came in one game. Redden is first in runs scored with 24 and she also has 87 strikeouts on the mound in 53 innings. Her ERA is 1.45.
It will be an exciting week for the team and the fans. It could potentially propel them on a streak to the finish line and a hopeful state tournament berth, but that is still a tad far away.
The WVDN will have scores, posts, and recaps of the Lady Cavaliers all week long.
